Hard to do a complete assessment so quickly. Sinjar is actually a very high ridge, 40 miles long.
I would imagine satellites and recon aircraft could get an accurate estimate of how many people are on that mountain. My guess is that the US Forces were there to evaluate the tactical situation. Is there a safe line of egress? Apparently there is to the north. This is good news.
