Why the Republican freak-out over Obama's immigration order is both dumb and inhumane {Barf Alert]
The Week ^ | 08/13/2014 | By Joel Dodge

Like it or not, these are the facts: There are 11.7 million undocumented immigrants living in United States. The U.S. Immigrant and Customs Enforcement only has the capacity to remove about 400,000 per year. That's less than 4 percent of the total undocumented population.

Keep these facts in mind as President Obama prepares to announce an executive action to protect certain classes of undocumented immigrants — and as Republicans lose their minds over it. Obama's expected move isn't a sinister example of "domestic Caesarism," as Ross Douthat would have it, or "stealth amnesty," in the words of Reihan Salam. It is an eminently reasonable response in the face of congressional inaction, while the conservative opposition puts them on the wrong side of both basic humanitarian instincts and public welfare.

The executive action is expected to expand deferred action to more undocumented immigrants. Deferred action provides an assurance to certain immigrants that they won't be pursued for deportation. With it comes work permits, so those who won't be deported can pursue legitimate work.

The legal basis for deferred action is grounded in prosecutorial discretion — the authority of law enforcement agencies to determine how and when to enforce the law. Such discretion is necessary given scarce agency resources. It's why police and prosecutors devote most of their time to pursuing serious offenses rather than going after every crime on the books. It would be a waste of resources to charge and punish jaywalkers or adulterers, for instance.

Given these constraints, officials have prioritized certain classes of immigrants for removal. ICE specifically targets three categories of undocumented immigrants: those who present national security or public safety risks; those who have recently entered; and those who have reentered after being removed.

With everything else thats making life tougher in this country these days its increasingly annoying to be continually threatened with this particular stupidity.

Seriously, what happened to people that they don't have enough sense to not crap in their (our) own nest?

11.7 million? Please don’t insult our intelligence. It’s much higher than that. Ask CBP or ICE...

Illegals are pouring across the border in record numbers but every time I read an article about how many are here the number stays the same or gets smaller.

Even back in 2004 the federal government was admitting there were at least 12 million here. (in truth probably 20 or 30 miillion)

Now, ten years later after millions more have entered, we are being told there are (supposedly) fewer than 12 million.

Remember that dumb ‘ol Republican, Ike?
“Operation Wetback?”
HE managed to get rid of more than 50% of the illegals way back in the dark ages of the 1950’s.

Sound familiar except for the proper names?

“Barbarian tribes had grown stronger for some time, and united themselves to challenge Roman hegemony. In the late 4th century, however, the Huns began to overrun barbarian territories. In 376, they forced many Thervings, led by Fritigern, to seek exile into the Eastern Roman Empire. Soon after, high taxes, Roman prejudice, and government corruption turned them against the Empire. The group began looting and pillaging throughout the Eastern Balkans. In the Battle of Adrianople in 378, Fritigern decisively defeated the Eastern Emperor Valens, who died during, or soon after, the battle. Peace was eventually established in 382, when the new Eastern Emperor, Theodosius I, signed a treaty with the aggressors, later known as the Visigoths.”

Based upon the author’s logic, we need to stop arresting, trying, and convicting thieves, rapists, burglars, etc.

” 11.7 million undocumented immigrants”

Why do we keep allowing them to use this low-ball number? It is more upward of 25-30 million.

I’d volunteer to be in charge of trying to exceed that number. Pretty sure this country could move a whole lot more if we tried hard enough.

If 1 million people were returned in the course of a year, it might make people finally realize that illegal immigrants will not be tolerated.

Busy harassing zero’s enemies. You know, the domestic terrorists like the Tea Party, gun owners or businesses that sell guns and the like. Much more of a priority than illegals and those that hire them.

If you seize all their assets before you deport them and send them home with only the clothes on their backs, there will be a self deportation so they don’t loose all their assets.

Great idea.....they shouldn't be entitled to keep the profits of their crime. We seize drug dealer assets, why not do the same to invaders?

The optic of the legalization will sink the Dems. We can’t stop Obama only the Democrats can (if at all). But we can make them pay.

Right on. Grab every illegal and drop them off at the southern border regardless of where they came into the US.

Yeah, the UN and a host of others will be screaming "human rights violations" and Mexico will be complaining. So what. They don't care that they came into the US this way, why should they have a reason to complain when they go back the same way?

This is a deeply inhumane . . . for millions of immigrants to needlessly live with the specter of deportation hanging over their heads. This would condemn them to living in the shadows and working in tenuous, often-exploitative conditions — even though immigration officials have no interest in deporting them.

The RNC, CofC, and business organizations demand "reform". I do not understand why.

Once the ILLEGAL aliens are legal they will no longer work for low wages, they will not be exploited. Don't the RNC, CofC, and business organizations understand that?

The workers will be free to organize and the unions could well be OTA (other than American).

The drug cartels could rake in billions from such unions and what businessman would refuse "Pay up or 'off with your head!'"

The RNC, CofC, and business organizations must know something that makes them feel that it will not happen that way.

My guess is the American unions are expected to organize the legal workers, keep them in check, and "demand" a couple of modest concessions from businesses.

Mexicorruption's ruling class has long been quoted describing how to eat an elephant, one bite at a time. They will not pass up this opportunity. If the drug cartels don't organize the workers then Mexicorruption's ruling class will. IMO.

Also, I hear immigration "reform" advocates talk about how the people working in the "shadows" have helped fund our Social Security. IOW they paid in but they will never get anything back for those payments.

Not so. The SSA maintains a No Match File where W-2 data are kept that do not match SSA master files. That data are never deleted unless the data are moved to valid accounts in SSA master files.

After immigration "reform" there will be millions (tens of millions?) of valid accounts created and the No Match File data can then be moved to SSA master files. It will help a lot if the former ILLEGAL workers have their old W-2 forms containing the fraudulent SSNs.
