Does anyone here breed dogs? I love a certain breed of dog and next year I am going to end one of my jobs and would like to buy and raise and train a few dogs of my favorite breed.

But I don't know how to start. Love information. Or even direction.

FreeRepublic you are like a husband, advisor, computer geek and everyday company to me. Love you all and wish I could have you all over for Chickensoup!!

If the breed isn’t Corgi, don’t waste your time. (I’m somewhat biased)

My dog cannot breed.

I like him and I like the dog breed in general.

I would like to have some of them with good lines and good histories to breed and have litters.

I want to breed working and family dogs.

If you do it on a sizeable scale be prepared to never take another vacation.

Nice to know. I am hoping to make a relationship with some. I have been looking at British breeders too.

I used to have a Jack Russell Terrier Terrorist. She was the best working dog in her dog obedience class - smart as a whip & loved to 'work'; however, we did some serious "head-knocking" when she was a pup over who was going to be in the pack leader position! One thing about JRs .... they don't stay on the floor. She was like a cat and could get up on anything in a flash. She died quietly in her sleep at 13, quite the contrast to her one heck of a gung-ho life. A friend has one that hunts with the 'big dogs' (labs, Chessies, Goldens) - pheasants no less. Love the breed, but they are definitely not for everyone.

____________

No, not on any scale. Just a couple of litters a year.

Decker Rat Terriers should be on your radar.

You should breed a bulldog with a shih-tzu.

excellent advice. I was searching for a way to tell her not to do it at all but if she has dogs that are trained and certified and have a good resume, then it may not matter whether they are “pure bred.”

It will be difficult to find a good line that will agree to let you breed the dog unless you are fully committed to all that I have listed under conscientious breeder.

I see plenty of good family/working dogs in the two breeds I own- two from great breeders, one rehomed from a breeder, and one rescued because the breeder couldn't find homes for what they thought was a good breeding and dumped them at a rescue. Said dog also has a congenital heart defect.

This is good to know. I am trying to learn as much as I can. I have the property and the ability and sometimes one has to do something that adds to the world.

I see so much good in the dog sports I do. But I also see tons of bad, with too many people looking to make a buck. After years of owning mutts, I got my first pure bred and papers dog almost 7 years ago. Best choice I ever made. Excellent breeder with proven lines that were traced back 8 generations. My other breed isn’t registered, but had all the same tests and considerations- and comes from proven lines. He’s incredible.

My advice to you is to let someone else add to the world until you are know what you are getting into.

I also suggest you talk to breeders who have the breed you want. You will be able to tell right away who the hobby breeders are versus the conscientious. Stay away from the hobby ones.

If you're looking to turn a profit, good luck. Breeders quite often end up in the hole, esp. with large litters. Pups usually get dew claw removal by age of 3 days, plus all the shots/worming/health checks before they go home. Then there's structure evals from a top professional. And of course, what do you do with the pups who you can't find homes for?

There is A LOT that goes into this. Its not like opening a lemonade stand. :)

It is MUCH more complicated than u might think. Some breeds have been so destroyed they are beyond help.

I'll say! Just look what happened to the weenie dogs!
