Benin Republic, Nigeria’s neighbour, has reported its first case of Ebola. The suspected victim is however a Nigerian. He is now receiving treatment in a hospital in Cotonou, the seat of government.

Health Minister Dorothée Gazard, an associate professor of parasitology and mycology, said on state television on Thursday, that a sample of of the Nigerian blood has been sent to Senegal for testing, .

The case is unconfirmed but Gazard’s announcement triggered widespread fears in the political capital Cotonou. Many people said they would stock up on food and stop eating at popular roadside food stalls to avoid possible infection, witnesses said.

Over 900 people have died in West Africa since the outbreak of the virus early this year.

Benin, free since 1960, but in business since the 15th century ... yet they don’t have the medical equipment to test a blood sample for Ebola, so it’s sent to Senegal.
No microscope. Entire country. Mmmm mmm mmm

We should go to Africa and divide all of it into tiny little countries like this and appoint FReepers to run them.

You need an electron microscope to see the Ebola worms. An optical one just shows cells popping. If you have Ebola experience with an optical, you can see the crystal concentrations of the Ebola worms getting ready to pop out of the cell wall. But that observation is not definitive.

And not to be alarmists, but...

BTW - There is actually two cases reported in Benin under investigation.

Isn't that Mormon theology for the afterlife?

All it would take is one psycho taking a vial of blood, injecting himself and coughing all over anyone, doorknobs, etc in a international hub like LAX or Copenhagen. Surprised no one has done it.

It is a very painful way to die. If you can handle gore, not algore, then do a search for images of Ebola patients. Very nasty stuff. Some compare its affects on the human body to massive radiation exposure.

Anybody keeping a list of where Ebola has spread to? So far I can count the following:

Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone were cited by WHO as needing to declar national emergencies. (Captain Obvious visit’s WHO)

Benin (two patients sick who were in contact with Sawyer)

England (Air passenger that collapsed)
US (2 missionaries transferred to Atlanta, 1 Doc in NY, 1 in East TN on voluntary quarantine)
Spain (Missionary transferred)

Meanwhile WHO says not to ban international travel (...because this needs to get worse for them to look important).

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
