Tea Party Holds Ground in GOP Primaries

The Tea Party may not be knocking off incumbents, but it doesn’t appear to be losing any ground within the GOP.

So while conservatives weren’t able to claim any more establishment scalps this 2014 primary cycle to place on the mantelpiece next to Eric Cantor or Richard Lugar, they didn’t suffer any significant losses or real backlash from the pro-business wing of the Republican Party.

The big target on the right Tuesday was Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, who faced a challenge from Milton Wolf, a suburban Kansas City radiologist who first gained fame for being Barack Obama’s conservative second cousin. While the most serious Tea Party groups, such as Club for Growth, never played in the race, Wolf got endorsements from the Senate Conservatives Fund and the right-wing personalities Mark Levin and Erick Erickson. The challenger ran a race straight out of the Tea Party playbook, attacking Roberts for not being a real resident of Kansas and for being too liberal.

Roberts ended up winning a narrow but decisive victory Tuesday, by a margin of 48 percent to 41 percent. Two other minor Tea Party candidates got the remaining votes, as the underfunded and unimpressive Wolf surprisingly managed to hold a three-term incumbent to less than 50 percent.

The tea party won this election.

The three tea party candidates received 52% v Roberts 48%.

The tea party candidates other than Wolf were in the single digits. Why didn’t they throw their support to Wolf on the eve of the election when they saw they had no chance in hell to win?

Were the other candidates spoilers and not really tea party?

I don’t believe GHW Bush had 90% going into the primaries. I’d appreciate being corrected (via sources) if I’m mistaken.

He had 90+ during and shortly after the first Iraq war (8/2/90 - 2/28/91) but not come primary time. That approval rating was mostly ground away via the traitorous press at the time, IIRC.

George Bush had it made if he had held to the one promise he made. No New Taxes. HE gave Buchanon, the press, Ross Perot, and Bill Clinton the ammunition to do him in.

That is true. Pat B. had a lot to do with grounding it away too. That said, I am not a fan of George H. W. Bush. He was just a better option that bubba Clinton.

If we have anything to be happy for this cycle it is that the defenders of scum like McConnell have no more excuses

“Tomorrow, Thursday we have our primary here in TN.”

Your primary is held on a Thursday?

That’s kinda odd considering most states (other than Louisiana) hold theirs on a Tuesday.

Used to live in Lenexa so looked at the vote by county just because I was curious. Looks like the larger population areas were generally behind Wolf, except for the Topeka area which isn’t surprising. Too bad those other two clowns had to run. My oldest grandson lives in Douglas County and I did remind him this last weekend that he needed to vote for Wolf, which he did, as did several of my friends who live up there in Johnson and Wyandotte counties. Did all I could do from Texas. Sorry Wolf was not successful.

Looked like the two other “minor” Tea Party candidates

took away enough votes to defeat Wolf.

Dems and eRepubs may have supported the minor

parties ...in my opinion. YMMV
