Back in the day FR did member polls from time to time. The question of purity versus pragmatism would be a great one to poll.
In the 18th century, I imagine the pragmatists in the GOP would have supported this man wholeheartedly.
I mean, he did the pragmatic thing when Congress failed to accept Britain's 1778 proposal to grant full self-governance in the colonies, right? Wouldn't that have been the proper way to go? When he was offered command of West Point, it made perfect sense to surrender the fort to the British, no?
