Fatally Shot FSU Professor Waited 19 Minutes for Ambulance to Arrive
ABC News ^ | Aug 1, 2014 | Matt Gutman

It took paramedics 19 minutes to arrive at the home of a Florida State University professor shot in his garage after a neighbor called 911 – with the dispatcher’s confusion contributing to the delay and one EMS unit replaced by another, authorities said.

Dan Markel, 41, was shot as he drove his car into his garage on July 18. The killer fired a single bullet through the driver’s window, striking him just beneath the jawline, sources told ABC News.

A neighbor called 911, noting that he happened upon Markel’s car because he’d been worried about a recent string of break-ins. The neighbor said he found Markel sitting in the driver’s seat of his car, his head covered in blood. Markel was still alive, the man told a dispatcher. But he wasn’t responsive.

“You need to send an ambulance in a hurry, an EMT,” the neighbor said, according to audio of the call released by police Thursday.

“I think you need to hurry.”

Because the dispatcher didn’t initially hear the caller mention anything about a gunshot wound, the response was delayed.

“The officer is going to be there first. [The EMT] is not going to come until we figure out what’s going on, but they are on the way as well, OK?” the dispatcher said.

“They better be if this guy’s got a shot … living,”

Things sometimes do get forgotten in confusion. Though if someone is reported alive but unresponsive with a bloody head at the wheel of a car, I might ask “do you think he could have been shot?”

Man 19 minutes is quick here. An hour is good unless they get lost.

As a former dispatcher myself, “man down” is all it should have taken to dispatch the paramedics.

He’s not responsive, so you decide not to send EMS but, a cop?

Well, hopefully he brought his powdered donuts with him so he could mark the body outline.

That is just incompetence.

I did not know this. It makes sense that they would triage and catagorize the level of emergency. If I ever have to help someone like that, I will be sure to state clearly and repeatedly if nec. that someone has just been shot.

Tragic miscommunication.

Is there training/advice on the best way to place a 911 call?

Later info here.

ABC News Chief Legal Affairs Anchor Dan Abrams said the direction of the investigation – with police focusing on different places where Markel was seen in the days before the shooting – shows that the shooter’s motive could be anything, from Markel’s blog to his legal research.

Well they used a gun so it must have been those Tea Baggers.

Dialing “911” is worse than dialing “Dial A Prayer.”

Whose parents are upset because he gave their precious a “B” instead of an “A”? What students are upset because they got a grade they are unhappy with? What whackjob student infatuated with the ex-wife thought he could clear up her divorce and make her want him by killing the guy? What did the ex-wife stand to gain?

That does it. I’m going to tell everyone I know that if I ever get shot pulling into the driveway, to just drag me to the hospital themselves and that I’ll do the same for them.

It took five minutes for paramedics to arrive to the scene when my son was hit by a car. That made all the difference in the world. Also, an off duty police officer was on the scene quicker than that because he was outside when it happened, and he ran to the scene and held my son still as he was bleeding profusely. The paramedics’ notes from the drive to the hospital stated that they did not think son would make it and questioned whether or not to give him the needed IVs because they thought he would be dead on arrival. Alas, he lived. The trauma unit provided excellent care. Timing is everything. Well, help from Above is everything.
