Residents of Iraq's second-largest city, which has been under the control of ISIS since early June, have reportedly started clashing with militants, Tim Arango reports for The New York Times.
They're chafing under the brutal rule of an organization too extreme even for Al Qaeda. But ISIS's assault on the region's cultural heritage has been particular cause for local alienation from the group.
The residents of Mosul started to react negatively to ISIS' rule in the city after the militants razed a tomb that was thought to have contained the remains of the prophet Jonah. Jonah is revered in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths, and the tomb was one of the city's icons.
So far, resistance to ISIS's drive to destroy historic sites in the city — with almost 24 marked for demolition — has been patchy but nevertheless noticeable. A mass of citizens confronted ISIS fighters as they attempted to destroy the city's famed leaning minaret. According to witnesses, the landmark was saved.
Residents in Mosul are said to have formed armed gangs to counter ISIS. Bashar al-Kiki, the chairman of the Nineveh Provincial Council, of which Mosul is a part, told The Times that armed citizens had killed four ISIS militants.
“The people of Mosul are intensely angry at ISIS,” al-Kiki told The Times. “They can’t bear them anymore. This volcano of anger will explode soon.”

I think that’s a wonderful idea, but they don’t have the weapons or the organization. We’re surely not going to support them, since Obama is clearly on the side of ISIS or whatever is the most radically anti-Western group at any time in any country.
Praise GOD, and prayers for those fighting back against the evil.
Sadly, you are right.
But the Kurds do have the weapons. So does Syria, Russia, and Iran.
We have just written ourselves out of the Middle East.
It could be that ISIS’ destruction of the tomb of Jonah was the straw that broke that camel’s back; Jonah is considered a prophet in Islam (I think he’s called Yunus in Arabic) and that’s a bridge too far for your average Muslim.
The ideology that fuels ISIS is Salafism, and when I think Salafism, Saudi Arabia comes to mind (along with Wahhabism; there’s the saying that most Salafists aren’t Wahhabists, but all Wahhabists consider themselves Salafists) so I imagine the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia might start taking a closer look at their own internal developments. There was already a serious incident back in 1979 when some dullard was talked into believing he was the Mahdi and his crazed followers stormed the Masjid al-Haram. It took the Saudi security forces quite some time to drive them out.
Of course, then the Saudis promptly screwed up by NOT hunting down the nutburger sympathizers of this would-be Mahdi and instead giving in to their ludicrous demands.
But that’s another story.
The Underground in WWII did damage to the Germans. The Warsaw Ghetto is another example of people who were not willing to die easily.
True - but the Middle East will come to us. That’s probably what Obama is hoping.
RE: Were surely not going to support them,
Heck, Obama won’t even support the group that really has the ability to fight them ( and they DID repel ISIS ) -— The Kurds.
Their Peshmerga fighting force will NOT RUN and fight to the death. All they want is America’s support.
And get this, they are the ones he;ping the Christians who have been driven out of Mosul.
Obama’s response -— (crickets).
Does their lack of commitment and their irresolute conduct in selection of leadership really make them their own worst enemy?
Wishful thinking. The time to fight was when these asshats came in. Stop them before they get established.
These Reports Signal The Beginning Of The End For ISIS In Iraq: Mosul Residents Fighting Back
I’d like to see a different version of this headline, as follows:
These Reports Signal The Beginning Of The End For Progressivism in America; Blue State Residents Fighting Back
As we may have to do to the regime if things continue on their present course.
They’re disarmed and scared. The Iraqi army is useless, which I’m sure Obama knew very well when we abandoned them, and he’s sure not coming to their aid now, even though their president specifically appealed for US help.
I doubt these few attacks even signal the end of the beginning for ISIS.
There has to be sustainable change for better, something that lasts and progresses in a positive direction, away from Islamics, Islamists, and so forth.
Obama is an abomination as is his administration. I say that thoughtfully & considering his trackrecord as the president so far. Many, outside the US, said he was inexperienced in foreign policy before he was elected as president - that was to put it mildly. We now see the proof. Next President of the US will have a massive task ahead of him/her. They need to be fully versed & experienced on foreign policy at the very least.
Problem with Obama is he neither has managed to deal effectively with US domestic issues nor with the US foreign policy. Just goes to show that whilst electing a person to show one doesn't discriminate based on skin colour is admirable, the same line of thinking is no basis for having an effective president.
“...even though their president specifically appealed for US help.”
Right, but isn’t HE the same guy who specifically asked us to leave?
“hes sure not coming to their aid now, even though their president specifically appealed for US help.”
We are helping the Iraqis defend against IS.
Have you seen the ‘Iraqi military’ drone strike films? The Iraqis don’t have drones.
We have an appreciable footprint in several areas. There are boots on the ground, within bases and compounds, assisting the Iraqis.
From two weeks ago, remember this one? Heh. Should be over soon, right? Another one:
