Ebola has spread across the globe: ...officials try to trace 30,000 linked to death of US victim

Fears of a global Ebola pandemic are 'justified' an expert has said as Nigerian health officials try to trace 30,000 people at risk of contracting the deadly disease following the death of Patrick Sawyer.

The U.S. citizen boarded a flight in Liberia carrying the disease to Nigeria, potentially infecting 'anyone on the same plane'.

It comes as Nigerian actor Jim Iyke sparked outrage, posting a picture of himself wearing an Ebola mask while sitting in a first class airport lounge as he fled Liberia.

The 'Nollywood' star posted a message on his Instagram page saying he had cut short a business trip to Monrovia in Liberia - where at least 600 people have already died from the disease.

The death toll for this, the worst outbreak recorded since the Ebola virus was discovered in 1976, stands at 672, while more than 1,200 people have been infected.

“Generally it is much worse than what they are telling you.”

Or much less of a worry. It was posted earlier that direct physical contact is needed to spread.

maybe the plane headed to algeria had an ebola case on it... and was shot down... this could get very ugly.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION: In an outbreak, it is hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected as a result of contact with an infected animal (15). Person-to-person transmission occurs via close personal contact with an infected individual or their body fluids during the late stages of infection or after death (1, 2, 15, 27). Nosocomial infections can occur through contact with infected body fluids due to the reuse of unsterilized syringes, needles, or other medical equipment contaminated with these fluids (1, 2). Humans may be infected by handling sick or dead non-human primates and are also at risk when handling the bodies of deceased humans in preparation for funerals, suggesting possible transmission through aerosol droplets (2, 6, 28). In the laboratory, infection through small-particle aerosols has been demonstrated in primates, and airborne spread among humans is strongly suspected, although it has not yet been conclusively demonstrated (1, 6, 13). The importance of this route of transmission is not clear. Poor hygienic conditions can aid the spread of the virus

They’ve recently claim to have traced it back to the fruit bat. I say ‘claim’ as up until recently they didn’t know for sure where it came from.

"Opening lines from the Hot Zone explain it has a 2-24 day incubation period and is active on surfaces for up to 10 days."

Well, we can sigh with relief then, because we know that those gas pump handles, convenience stores and West African clerks in tourist areas are nice and clean!

One last thing, which I saw on another thread (but bears repeating): wonder how many people from the hot zone have crossed our southern border in recent weeks?

Not sure. But, here’s an article from last year....UN warns of illegal Mexican border crossers....coming from Africa, Asia....

If they were here a year ago....

Supposedly, 30,000 are being tracked down by Afica nations because they came into close contact with people infected with ebola virus. Google it for yourself and do not take my word for it . . .

None of those precautions will protect you against Ebola if you contact an infected person. You need full body cover protection with Ebola.

Ebola seems to have a reservoir in the fruit bat. I would expect that Ebola can spread wherever there are fruit bats.

Fruit bats are considered a delicacy in parts of Africa. Africans also have other customs that are conducive to the spread of Ebola.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Spot on. And that’s what I was trying to say. No one has ever contracted ebola in the manner which is being suggested here. And the virus is not airborne. Thanks for the post.
