Thanks to Paul James of the Facebook group World War II 70th Anniversary, I can post this alternate version of the photo on page 11 of today's news.

The alternate caption: "US 3rd Marine Division leathernecks disembark on the beach from an LVT-1 of the 3rd Amphibious Tractor Battalion during training for the invasion of Guam on Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal during the week of May 12, 1944."

Hmm. A little different than the Times caption. Which one is accurate?

I suspect it’s on Guadalcanal during the practice for the Guam landing. No airplanes in sight, for one thing.

Notice they all carry M1 carbines (unlike the marine standing below), have shiny helmets and are wearing 1941 pattern cotton herringbone twill (HBT) utilities which would be sage green rather than the darker olive green of the army.
