~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, South Carolina

Shaw Air Force Base is the home of the United States Air Force 20th Fighter Wing (20 FW). It is also home to Headquarters, Ninth Air Force (9 AF) and Headquarters, United States Central Command Air Forces (USCENTAF). The mission of the 20 FW is to provide, project, and sustain combat-ready air forces. It is the Air Force's largest combat F-16 wing.

Today's 20th Fighter Wing can trace its lineage to 28 July 1947, when the 20th Fighter Wing, began at Shaw Field, South Carolina, as a Ninth Air Force unit. Components of the new fighter wing included the 20th Maintenance and Supply Group, the 20th Airdrome Group, and the 20th Station Medical Group (later Tactical Hospital).

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a compact, multi-role fighter aircraft. It is highly maneuverable and has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack. It provides a relatively low-cost, high-performance weapon system for the United States and allied nations.

The Fighting Falcon is a dogfighter with numerous innovations including a frameless, bubble canopy for better visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while under high g-forces, and reclined seat to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot.

It was also the first fighter aircraft deliberately built to sustain 9-g turns. It has a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than one, providing enough power to climb and accelerate vertically – if necessary.

Before each 8 PM concert, there is a 7 PM recital that is not broadcast on KING-FM. The first week of the series, Hyunah Yu, a soprano, sang that song in a recital of Schumann songs that involve flowers.

I teared up at the end of the first line when she sang it.

I did that road trip! My first vacation one year after college graduation (1968).

Drove from Wichita, KS to Sumter, SC, where my brother was stationed at Shaw. (August, 1969.)

Played lots of golf on the base golf course.

Good morning, Everyone.

Good morning to our

Military, our Allies, and their families.

Thank you, Lauren, for preparing the
Canteen for today’s activities.

It’s getting harder and harder
to get to the Canteen on Mondays.
Now, I'm going to dash and get in a walk.
It’s a nice cool morning and
the air smells fresh for a change.

I’ll catch up on pings when I get back.
Please stay.

Grab a cup of joe or tasty tea.

The FR Canteen is

Come on in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes,
conversation,
silliness,
and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM ~ DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above Honoring those who have served before.

Sumpter SC holds the distinction of producing the worst Bar B Q ever placed on a plate to be sold. The sauce is mustard yellow and sickening

Good morning bert ((HUGS))

I’m so happy you said that about the bbq so that if I am ever in SC I won’t get any. BTW, I cannot abide NC bbq, either.
