US Military Dusts Off Decades-Old 'Readiness' Plans for Russia
Yahoo News/ABC ^ | 7-25-2014 | Lee Ferran

As American officials fire off diplomatic salvos at Russia in response to that nation’s purported actual artillery salvos into Ukraine, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said recently that among other actions, the U.S. military is dusting off decades-old plans, just in case.

“We’re looking inside our own readiness models to look at things that we haven’t had to look at for 20 years, frankly, about basing and lines of communication and sea lanes,” Gen. Martin Dempsey, America’s top military officer, said at the Aspen Security Forum Thursday evening. “What the military does when faced with these crises is – our job is preparedness, deterrence and readiness.”

In addition to its own plans, Dempsey said the U.S. military is having “conversations with our NATO allies about increasing their capability and readiness” and that there’s a “very active” ongoing process and debate about how best to provide support to Ukraine.

That sort of thinking borders on hysteria.

The US has been down this road many times.

With Russia, it has never...(I repeat) N-E-V-E-R led to war.

The tactics we use generally speaking are to apply pressure, verbal diarrhea at first, then they get various allies involved, sanctions begin, the UN starts doing nothing as usual and then more sanctions, and at some point we use a proxy and send them arms but with plausible deniability.

If everything goes right and according to plan, the Russian will pull back as he usually does, because he has no moral authority to do what they usually do.

It should be accepted fact, that at this time, we are in Cold War II. Just accept it.

With these bozos, it just is what it is....

Looks like a plan I can live with and have temporary safety for my family and the nation.

That sort of thinking borders on hysteria.

oh btw, didn't miss that part just want to add ... all critical thinking always borders on hysteria. Is the true nature of the mind to try and out-think the Beast cause as each knows the Beast is clever. I'm not but the Beast is.

Because the plans are too old.

The assets that these plans contemplate positioning and using, are not there anymore.

New plans have been drawn and are updated periodically.

All we are doing is raising Russia’s awareness. It’s meant for Russia’s ears.

I didn’t think they meant literally the old Cold War plans when Poland and East Germany was part of Russia’s Warsaw Pact alliance.

I interpreted it as saying that we were doing our due diligence and putting the Russia files on the work tables.

Saying the Pentagon is dusting off it’s NATO studies opposing the Russian threat, is not exactly complicated news, or something that the Russians needed to be told.

Are people here really surprised at this?

“They are trying to whip up a frenzy over Ukraine so we won’t be watching the things they are doing to the country.”

You’re absolutely right; this nonsense is a diversion from the destruction of our country and way of life. Americans are (rightly) accused of being ignorant about the world around them (outside of the US), yet they follow these diversions because they are bombarded with sensationalist news about it 24/7.

We have shown we’ve relinquished the role as the world’s policeman; we aren’t going to war with anybody, and posturing by the girlie Muslim foreigner in the White House (who asked Putin for some time, when he’d have more leeway) is laughable.

What would our media be reporting if they didn’t have these sideshows around the globe? Our bustling economy? These stories just replaced the non-story about Chris Christie and some lane closures that were never connected to him to begin with.

Americans are born customers.

“all critical thinking always borders on hysteria”

Well....it shouldn't.

Tactical military assessments and potential strategies are constantly being kicked around, and improved..and I would not even attempt to critical think my way into anticipating exactly what they will do.

Frankly, it's not in our pay grade to do so. We pay them to do it and we just live our lives.

This is a attitude that you have to adopt, especially if we are going to do another round with the Rooskies...

When I was only 8 or 9, I used to lay in bed and pretend what it would be like when the sky lit up from a nuclear blast, knowing that it could happen at any moment on any day.

We had to learn to live with that.

Because you have no control over it. Just as the southern coastal areas live with hurricanes, and the Midwest with tornado's, and California with earthquakes.

So.....go on critical thinking, but don't let it ruin your day.

Apollo 13 comes to mind of some of the best critical thinking done and completed where three lives were saved during hysteria.

I think you are mixing up the meaning of the term “hysteria”, with the term “challenging”.

Problems are but opportunities to show that you can solve them.

In my world, there is no such thing as a problem and no need for hysteria.

“You’re absolutely right; this nonsense is a diversion from the destruction of our country and way of life.”

That would only be true if the Ukraine event was created or caused by the US.

It was not.

But there is a effort to divert attention from Obama’s actions to date, and that is what I read today with Whitehouse staffers spreading a bunch of baloney about impeachment.

Now that, was a diversion.

Do you have a family?

Now that can be challenging....lol

And yes, I have had positions during my career where quick thinking, quick actions and a certain amount of bravery were required, on a 12 hour a day basis.

Some fond memories remain..

You came home after only twelve hours? Wow, I envy you. I was on the road for several years and sometimes had to fly my family to where I was just to see them. Hysteria, pure hysteria. If you were allowed to go home at night, a God sent blessing, I assure you. Motels became my home. My office was in my vehicle. I could not hide. I had a suitcase phone, a pager and a hand held radio. Not a life for a family person at all.

I think it was just a phrase to describe what they are doing, at least that is the way I hear it.

Rhetorical warfare of what type? What is the great significance of gently saying that they are dusting off their Russia papers, instead of saying we are making plans against Russia?

Which do you think sounds better to the public?

“That would only be true if the Ukraine event was created or caused by the US.”

No, it is true because it is happening in apart of the world where we have little influence or interest and even less power. The events in Ukraine are absolutely meaningless to the vast majority of Americans, and if people think there is another Cold War coming then they deserve fifty more years of that political theater.

I don’t think you understand how a cold war battle plan works.

It’s 97.5 % Rhetorical exchanges.

If you see a retraction of the comment, then he had a brain fart, but I don’t think that is what it was. Because the comment is a folksy and inaccurate statement.

Less experienced officers from countries like China or Iran as often prone to making statements like that in a public forum, but not US officers.

So either he was drinking and made a mistake, or it was intentional.

The reality is that the cold war never ended. It is really still in play, just cooler. It is now warming back up.

Might as well get used to it.

Otherwise you might go crazy...
