Gov. Rick Perry of Texas plans to order 1,000 National Guard troops to his state's border with Mexico in an effort to stem the tide of immigrants illegally entering from Central America, dispersing around the country once they've made it into Texas.
Critics will call it a stunt and accuse Perry of showboating, but at least he is taking action, while President Obama, who took an oath to defend the country from all enemies foreign and domestic, drinks beer, plays pool and attends fundraisers as our borders are overrun. Enemies are more than adversary nations with weapons. An enemy can also be a person, or groups of people who, by their presence in a country, undermine its economy, strength and values.
Polls show a majority of Americans favor stopping illegal aliens from entering the country.
In a recent telephone survey by Rasmussen Reports, 59 percent of likely U.S. voters believe "the primary focus of any new immigration legislation passed by Congress should be to send the young illegal immigrants back home as quickly as possible." Only 27 percent think they should be allowed to stay.
The public isn't buying what they've been told by the media and some Democrats that the illegal immigrants are fleeing dangerous conditions in their own countries. According to Rasmussen, "Most voters (52 percent) believe they are coming to America for economic reasons." Just 31 percent think they're coming for their own safety.
Texas' border with Mexico is 1,200 miles long and 1,000 National Guardsmen won't make a significant difference, but as supplements to the U.S. Border Patrol they could slow the tide. The Guardsmen, however, might be useful in sending a message to Central American countries that the odds of making it into Texas are being substantially raised and the journey is not worth the risk. That message would counter what has been promoted in Central American media: that if you can get to America, you can stay in America.
During a 2012 Republican presidential debate, Perry defended giving in-state tuition breaks to illegal immigrants, saying those who opposed the practice don't have a heart. That was about immigrants already here. At the time, Perry says he warned the administration of the increasing number of unaccompanied children crossing the border. He claims the White House never responded to his concerns.
If Perry's detractors, of whom there are many, criticize him for a "symbolic" act, what about President Obama's motive for not sending federal troops, or finishing the border fence? Obama's critics say the president is "importing" future Democratic voters and creating another underclass that will be dependent on government and thus, the party of big government, the Democrats.
Action, even if insufficient to solve the problem, beats doing nothing in the minds of many Americans disgusted with gridlock and a dysfunctional federal government. Perry's planned troop rollout will occur over the next 30 days. If it reduces the number of illegal immigrants flooding into Texas, Perry could embarrass and serve as a contrast to President Obama and congressional Democrats. It might also improve Perry's presidential chances should he seek the 2016 GOP nomination.
Should the immigrants, as a result of Perry's action, attempt to enter the U.S. at the borders of New Mexico, Arizona or California, the governors of those states might consider following Perry's example.
At an Austin news conference, Perry said he expects Washington to foot the bill for the cost of deploying the Texas National Guard. Good luck with that. He may have more success at the border than with Congress or President Obama, who dither and waffle and stall as the issue of illegal immigration jumps to the top of American concerns.
Oh please, Cal. Bold move? We “heartless” citizens out here are unimpressed. When he gives the Nat’l Guard the power to apprehend and deny entry, then and only then can this be considered anything but posturing for ‘16.

Give the Perry bashing a rest. After you regroup, tell me who else is doing anything to help the situation.
Video can be a potent weapon these days.
Perry has gotten the ball rolling.
Once Perry has troops on the borders, he can start generating publicity to combat the propaganda from Team Obama and counteract the lies to show the American people that the illegals are not little children but are instead adults, gang bangers, cartel members and criminals.
This will help show the reality and hopefully sway public opinion.
With sufficient public support, Obama himself can be forced to deport the illegals.
It is important to understand that the majority of Hispanics , legal and illegal, in the US are of Mexican descent who feel no kinship for the Central Americans and consider them a lower form of life as well as considering them competition for jobs and welfare handouts.
The whole goal here is to mobilize public opinion to force Obama himself to take real action to deport the illegals and to make Obama explain himsrlf and take responsibility for creating this disaster.
I used to hate Rick Perry. I used to rant and rave about him here, especially about the Guardasil thing. I could not stand him.
The this last year I met Rick Perry and spent an hour speaking to him.
He isn't perfect but he absolutely loves this country. He also has the ability to learn from his own mistakes. Remember, Ronald Reagan was a Democrat at one time.
He's going to run again. And this time he won't be loaded up on pain meds trying to "debate".
We could do worse than Perry and have been.
One thing about Perry and it goes to the debate mess up and his not being able to remember something. The guy has a wicked memory for peoples names. It is a freaky thing to watch. For example, I saw him meet the son or daughter of someone for the first time. He would ask them their full name then he would ask them about their parents who he had only met once and then rattle off the names of their entire family. He can tell where you are from in Texas by your accent.
I'd take Perry over most folks. Plus, the SOB can shoot a firearm.
Hooray for Govenor Perry. Thank God for some one who is trying to help. Any critics should either help Perry or Shut up.
I agree, this is an empty gesture.
Help him with what ? This is pure Kabuki theater and posturing for the 2016 Presidential race. He’s never been on our side on this issue.

Listen, I wish that Perry had actually done what he implied, and actually stopped the invasion or at least tried.
If he had, he would have been the hero, and I would have also supported him for President.
But once again, where the border is concerned, Rick proves himself to be all talk and no action.
This whole episode is meaningless without APPREHENDING the illegals. He has the authority to do this, his staff has admitted as much.

Our very own Supreme Court has ruled that states cannot use National Guard troops to enforce immigration.
Perry does have the authority to use the Texas NG for the purpose laid out in his release and it will be difficult for Obama to stop him.
Once the NG is deployed and focusing the media on what is really going on there, well - things can change.
Perry has a well thought out plan to thread the needle of legality and separation of powers here. That's why he had his AG do the brief
I am really getting tired of the same rhetoric about Perry. At this very early moment in time I think he would make the best candidate for 2016, If we still have a Country.
plus, he graduated from Texas A & M like my two kids did!
No “better” school “overall” than Texas A & M in the world, as far as I am concerned.
