If Rupert Murdoch succeeds in acquiring Time Warner, he will almost definitely need to divest CNN. But the deal would make the 21st Century Fox head the proud owner of HBO, home to frequent Fox adversary Bill Maher.
On Wednesday, Maher published a guest column in The Hollywood Reporter, imagining what would happen to his long-running HBO show if Murdoch takes over the network.
Maher begins by saying hes against the merger but never saw it coming. So many ways for a guy like me to lose his job, but I never dreamed these two would marry, he writes. I thought they were both too big. I should know by now, in American business, nothing is ever too big.
He goes on to use the potential deal as a platform to criticize the increasing consolidation of Americas media companies: Theres a terrible price to pay for this. (I mean besides the terrible price I personally will pay when Rupert takes over HBO and my show becomes Paste-Eating Time With Steve Doocy.) Maher ties the recent viral Comcast customer service call to a culture that makes it nearly impossible to switch cable companies, credit cards or insurance because the near-monopolies that exist in those areas.
As much as he fears his own termination, the reality is that Mahers job would probably be safe even if Murdoch does buy Time Warner. The last thing the Fox chief needs is to make Maher a martyr and have some opposing media conglomerate swoop in an snatch him up.
A couple of months ago, when Murdoch purchased Harlequin books, Maher imagined what that labels steamy softcore porn would sound like with a Fox News slant.

Promise?
Sounds good to me
Shut up, Bill.
Stop getting our hopes up.
If he did lose his job, it couldn’t happen to a much more deserving asshole!
If Rupert Murdoch Buys Time Warner and has to sell off CNN ,he can throw in Shepard Smith , Geraldo Rivera and Juan Williams to sweeten the deal
couldn’t agree more.
Hopefully Bill Maher has saved his money. He’s well paid for what he does. He’s part of that evil 1%.

I don’t think he would. Murdoch knows that there is room enough for both views to be aired separately. Both audiences will remain satisfied. I suspect no one except us news junkies will even know it happened for the most part, if the purchase is completed.
One can only hope. :-)
Actually, if Murdock buys HBO, he’d have to do almost a 100% cleanup and detoxification to cut through the stench of that channel!
HBO will still be far leftist. Murdoch won’t change that.
“I never dreamed these two would marry,
He is against, “marriage equality”!
I hope Rupert cans the asshat (but I bet the FCC will block the deal).
The left is already screaming bloody murder over this proposed merger.
But I don’t see any of them stepping up to the plate with $80 BILLION dollars of their own money to buy them out.
Someone with Maher’s qualifications would have no trouble finding a responsible job in either the food service or janitorial industries. Assuming, of course, the SEIU would tolerate him.
Just keep doing what you’re doing, it’ll take care of itself.
He’s been smoking too much weed. He seriously doesn’t know Murdock is a big time lib? ORrrrrrrr Maher has been “subsidised” for too long and his rating freaking suck. Murdock does make good business decisions, have to give him some credit there.
If he loses his job the fool will get a couple years unemployment checks, a free nobamaphone, medicaid, an EBT card and Goodness knows what else. What’s not to like? He’ll be a grifter gibmedat.
