Is your mail arriving after dark? USPS service cuts are to blame, watchdog says
Washington Post ^ | July 22, 2014 | Lisa Rein and Lynh Bui

Mail is being delivered after 5 p.m. almost 70 percent of the time to residents and businesses in the District and the Maryland suburbs in violation of U.S. Postal Service policy, an investigation released Tuesday found.

The number of letter carriers who are still on their routes after 5 p.m., even in the winter darkness, and the delayed delivery of letters and packages has grown so dramatically in recent years that the Capital District now ranks as the worst area in the country for late mail service, a report by Postal Service Inspector General David Williams concluded.

Northern Virginia also ranked in the top five areas of the U.S. where Americans received their mail late, auditors found.

Both regions were well above the national average for late mail delivery, which was 38 percent last year.

What a hardship. I think all the benefits are delivered electronically now.

Who cares if it’s late?

Why on earth does that matter?

he postal service should do a 5 year phase out.

Start by closing more post offices and eliminate Saturday service.

Eventually service should be 2 days a week as they have more employees retire.

Delivery companies operating in a state or county would have to guarantee a mail pick up or drop off twice a month to any location in that region.

Actually, my mail is being delivered earlier. Used to be delivered around 10 am. Today, the mail was here around 8:30 am.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds...

Fixed it.

Our postal carrier is so stressed out, that he is jittery and angry a lot of the time. He gets to our apartments around 4:30 or 5p.m. From here, he still has another hour or hour-and-a-half of deliveries.

PS: I live in downtown Oceanside CA. There is the old post office by the coast highway and a larger, newer one 9 blocks away across the freeway. The old one should be closed.

My mail used to come at 10 Am It now arrives at 5pm. When I questioned the carrier I was told he could finish his route by 1 pm but they would add more to his route so him and his fellow carriers dog it all day. Sad as hell seeing the truck go up the street at a crawl. Wonder why they are going broke?

My mail arrives around an hour later than it did maybe 10 years ago. The address has not changed.

No big deal at all and it may have more to do with changing how the route is run. Actually I have no idea but like I said, no big deal.

"The postal service should do a 5 year phase out."

That should start with an immediate phase-out of bonuses to supervisors. Then get rid of the bulk of the supervisors.

The correct term according to the article is “...winter darkness”. Framing is the manipulation of language.

Let me guess -- this is in the northeast.

Here, the carriers walk a mile or so between parking the truck and they walk as briskly as ever. See them every day.

“Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”

The quote comes from Herodotus, the Father of history in his “History of the Persian Wars”.

The Persian Emperors had their own pony express more than 500 years BC.
