Airbnb user turns squatter: Woman facing legal battle to get vacationer out of her Palm Springs home

A California Airbnb host says a guest is squatting in her 600-square-foot Palm Springs condo and is now threatening to sue her. Cory Tschogl, 39, described the situation as a 'horror story' and says she begged Airbnb for help through scores of emails and phone calls but the accommodation marketplace failed to get the renter out. He now has renters' protection under California law because he's been there longer than 30 days and it'll take three to six months, a lawyer and thousands of dollars to evict him.

In states like CA and NY with crazy tenant right laws you are taking a big risk with Airbnb.

What if you show up, threaten her at gunpoint, take her to some other location, drop her off, and then return to your place and change the locks?

And deny it ever happened.

Or something along those lines...

Tough to do nowadays. Cameras eveywhere. Better to chance it with the woodchipper out back.

What is “Airbnb”

It is Uber for rooms. You can use the app to rent your residence for vacationers/short term stays.

This is going to do wonders for the real estate rental market.

You're taking a risk with AirBnB in general.

I’d make that person an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Maksym is a male.

You’d get arrested for kidnappings and a whole slew of felonies. If you do something like this... You have to be absolute. Get me?

I really don’t understand the fascination with Airbnb. I certainly have no interest in using it.

Too many whack jobs out there.

Cut off gas, electric, water

Shine bright lights in windows at night

Play head banging heavy metal 24 /7 until gets message

I’d agree that some problems have permanent solutions. The world doesn’t need more predators or more parasites. I’ve lost patience with both groups, and this squatter is in the second category.

Here's the thing - what sort of guest has "great ratings" on AirBnB?

What kind of person routinely rents other people's homes all over the world?

The set of people who do this and who are not crazy/insolvent/both is too small to build a reliable business model on.

It’s a controversy here in Grand Rapids, where some people want to be able to stick these things anywhere with no oversight.

Simple regulations like alerting people that live around you that you are turning your house into an Airbnb were scoffed at by the supporters. They also don’t want to have to pay the same fees as actual licensed B&Bs.

If you want to be a hotel, then go and be a real hotel. This type of thing is just begging for trouble.
