Perrys office has said the Guard will largely play a role of deter and refer deter border crime by their visible presence along the border and refer illegal acts, including border crossings, to law enforcement. They dont plan to apprehend illegal immigrants, though, technically, they could, said Texas Adjutant General John Nichols.

The Constitution suggests that the National Guard when repelling an invasion can even use lethal force.

Why don’t some other states pitch in. Come on Gov Fallon, that is one tax I wouldn’t mind paying.
To: xzins
will it be a border patrol force or another “Toys for Tots”, babysitting and diaper-changing mission?

CORRECTION: I think the Constitution actually says ‘militia’. Don’t want to fall into the mistake of equating the militia and the NG. However, Texans of the appropriate age who are in the Texas NG would also be members of the militia.

What a cop-out. Remember this if La Raza Rick runs...and if we still have a country at that point.

You’re being way too hard on the only governor who has tried to do anything at all. The NG isn’t referring only to the BORDER PATROL, if you will notice. They are referring to the Texas security forces. That would mean referral includes checking before referral. They’ll be able to weed out criminal records.

Just as I thought.
Another empty, symbolic PR stunt by Perry.
The man is worthless where Illegal Immigration is concerned, but he sure wants you to think he is doing something, when he isn't.

I’ll give him credit for actually taking some action, yes, but what good will this do? Weeding out criminals won’t stop the invasion. Plus, his history of pro-amnesty makes me wary of his intentions. My criticism comes out of frustration.

Good first step, but Perry needs to do more in terms of enforcement.
Lets hope Presidential ambitions aren’t clouding his judgement.

I’m gonna disagree with you, socon. We rarely do. But the ‘deter and refer’ isn’t just to Border Patrol. It’s also to Texas Security/Rangers/etc., so the refer part will come with weeding out the criminals. This is a good thing, and Perry should get credit for it.
In addition, his state will pay close to a fifth of a billion per year for every 1000 troops they deploy. They no small amount to come unplanned out of any state’s budget...even one of the largest.
I think Perry deserves credit.

Our southern border is Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California...right?
Haven’t heard that the others are doing anything, have you?

Very little credit xzins.
While he is spending that billion per year for every 1000 troops, they could just as easily completely stop illegal immigration. And this defines Rick "Open Borders" Perry.
He NEVER really does anything, or supports anything that would stop Illegal Immigration, even when it is in his power to do it, whether it is supporting e-Verify, a Border Fence, AZ1070, or now, in the midst of this crisis, using the National Guard to actually stop the flow of Illegal Immigrants into Texas.
These are not the actions of a leader, but someone that wants to create an impression that he is strong on an issue, when he really isn't.
Those who do not have a criminal record will now be allowed to stay and further burden our county and they will eventually be criminals themselves when they perform the usual ID fraud that they all do.
Or, they will simply swell the ranks of Democrat voters who will be granted Amnesty.
Stopping those with a pre-existing Criminal Record should not be the focus. Stopping all Illegal Aliens should be. I'll not take part of his P.R. game when he knows he should do the right thing and refuses to do it.

Unless the Guardsmen are fully armed and authorized to defend themselves, then this is a meaningless gesture, similar to
Bush's 2006 deployment, which was a complete farce.
I have a buddy who went down as part of that force, and spent half his time poolside at the Tucson Doubletree, and the other half in some Mexican town across the border picking up senoritas bonitas.

In addition to the money, I also think it’s significant that they’re getting to filter criminals out.

It's not enough, especially when they could be stopping ALL Illegal Aliens.
He doesn't actually want to stop Illegal Immigration, just look like he is really strong, but compassionate on the issue, which he isn't.
