An anaconda snake is loose in New Jersey's Lake Hopatcong, and a local reptile expert said Friday he's breaking his silence after animal control told him to keep quiet about the dangerous reptile. "I've known it was an anaconda since last week, but I was told by animal control and state police not to say anything," Gerald Andrejcak, who works for Common Sense for Animals, told The New Jersey Herald. "Officials were afraid that if it came out that the snake was an anaconda it would cause mass hysteria. It needed to come out, it is a public safety issue."

I disremember the exact numbers but the estimated per capita comparison of reptiles vs. dogs by number of animals is like .00024 for reptiles vs. .03 for dogs.

Still safer to own a retic than a pit bull and I like both species.

“In 1962, W.L. Schurz claimed to have measured a snake in Brazil of 8.46 m (27.8 ft) with a maximum girth of 112 cm (3.67 ft). One female. reportedly measuring 7.9 m (26 ft) in length, shot in 1963 in Nariva Swamp, Trinidad contained a 1.5 m caiman. A specimen of 7.3 m (24 ft), reportedly with a weight of 149 kg (328lb) was caught in at the mouth of the Kassikaityu River in Guyana, having been restrained by 13 local men, and was later air-lifted for a zoo collection in the United States, but died in ill health shortly thereafter...The estimated weight for an anaconda in the range of 8 m (26 ft) is at least 200 kg (440 lb.)”.

So yes these animals do get quite large and can grow to almost 30 feet in length. Most of the ones caught are in rivers in Venezuela, it is quite conceivable that they grow even bigger deep in the Amazon jungle.

Even in South America there are no substantiated reports of an Anaconda killing and eating a human.

Green Anaconda

Particularly large anacondas may even consume large prey such as tapirs, deer, capybaras, and caimans, but such large meals are not regularly consumed. Many local stories and legends report the anaconda as a man-eater, but little evidence supports any such activity.

“There are many times more per dogs in this country than pet snakes.”

Don’t bet your paycheck on that.

Joe Bastardi says that this coming winter will be a brutal one.

Here in NW Illinois there are spiderwebs forming, the beans on our tree in the backyard are already brown (don’t know its name) and there is fog in the morning, much like our September-October weather.

there has never been a scientifically recorded specimen of any modern snake longer than 24 feet. Trust me, I wish there was. The longest scientifically recorded snake was a reticulated python named Fluffy that died at the Ohio zoo in 2012. She was 23 feet 9 inches long.

>> It amazes me that the self-same conservatives who howl like scalded cats when anybody merely mentions “gun ban” sit cheerfully by when “animal bans” are disgussed.<<

You are absolutely right! As the owner of two pit bulls, I am well aware of arguing this very point with so called conservatives.

As far as “animals” go, Human beings are certainly the biggest threat to all living creatures, especially dangerous to other humans. Yet I don’t hear them calling for a ban on humans.

I just watched a show that debunked the man-eater myth.

Their jaws simply cannot open properly to surmount the obstacle of human shoulders.

If we have confirmed report of a giant snake attaining 24 feet, is 26 or 28 feet in length inconceivable?

For many years, until recently, science did not confirm the existence of giant squid. No we know they are there.

Actually, yes, at this time it is. For a long time, scientists wondered why longer specimens were not being recovered. The answer is the same for giant insects. The oxygen content in our atmosphere is too low. Raise it up about 3% and you can get larger snakes and spiders. Raise it up 5% and you can get snakes the size of Titanaboa.

Like I said, I’d LOVE for their to be snakes larger than they are. My retic is 18 feet long and 270 pounds. The largest living snake now is “Twinkie” the reticulated python. Do a youtube search on that and you’ll see her. She’s a gentle giant just like most of these snakes are. She’s 330 pounds I believe.

They’re not the scary monsters that many people think they are. Get past the fear and ignorance and you’ll see they’re really incredible animals that are not nearly as a threat as many claim they are.

“If you don’t like snakes don’t get one. If you don’t like guns don’t have one.”

Sorry, but I can't see that these things are equivalent. Guns don't have a mind of their own, with the ability to slip out of the house and find their own prey. Just sayin...

How is a dog or a cat more dangerous than a 24 foot snake? (I think it’s safe to say this snake was someone’s pet at sometime since anacondas aren’t native to New Jersey)

A as a six foot adult, I have little fear of them. I have had large pythons draped around me at pet expos.

As a pet owner and a father of a small child, I would not be want one anywhere near my house.

They have escaped enclosures, been released in the wild, killed pets and children in confirmed reports across the nation.

Large snakes have been released into the wild in Florida and certain types have been known to cross breed. A fierce African Rock Python could cross breed with a larger Burmese Python, creating a very big snake with an aggressive disposition.
