Fear Indifference: Bordering on Inhumanity
Townhall.com ^ | July 19, 2014 | Kathryn Lopez

"Perhaps the Catholic church would volunteer to pony up some cash for the illegals' care then? Hmm?"

"Pope should stay out of it. Matter of civil laws, not church laws."

"Thinking that the pope should want the illegals to go to Argentina to get better soccer players for World Cup."

Those were just three Twitter responses I was tagged in, in response to a headline about Pope Francis calling so many of us out on our indifference.

Based on some of the reactions, you would have thought Pope Francis himself was giving unaccompanied minors rides in his Popemobile into the United States, encouraging the dangerous journey and chaos at the end of the road. Headlines certainly don't always help matters. The afore-quoted Tweeters were reacting to: "Pope Francis calls on U.S. to welcome illegal immigrants." His message though, wasn't a call to abolish borders and law, but to see the humanity, for goodness' sake.

What this shepherd of the leading charitable organization in the world said was that people of good will cannot tolerate a "throwaway culture"; this happens to be a leading theme of his papacy. We so often don't even look at the person next to us on an elevator. So, of course, women and children and men showing up on our border -- what is clearly both a humanitarian crisis and a political headache -- wanting a better life is abstract and foreign to most of us at best. In a message to a conference on migration in Mexico, Pope Francis addressed our current border situation: "I would ... like to draw attention to the tens of thousands of children who migrate alone, unaccompanied, to escape poverty and violence." They've largely made the trip, he wrote, from Central America and Mexico "under extreme conditions and in pursuit of a hope that in most cases turns out to be vain. They are increasing day by day." He described it as a humanitarian emergency that "requires, as a first urgent measure, these children be welcomed and protected."

Now before you agree with the Tweeters, read on. "These measures, however, will not be sufficient, unless they are accompanied by policies that inform people about the dangers of such a journey and, above all, that promote development in their countries of origin."

Instead of demanding the U.S. open its borders to whomever, whenever, the Pope implored, "this challenge demands the attention of the entire international community so that new forms of legal and secure migration may be adopted."

We live during a time when our senses are overloaded and our attention spans for other people's problems can be short. But the situation at our borders is about people we have a responsibility to as fellow human beings in a country that has much, even as we aren't always good stewards of the gifts.

We're talking about people who see -- or were told -- their recourse for hope in their lives was coming here. At the very least, we can show them love, which is not a government program or political platform. It is the people of Sacred Heart parish and the Archdiocese of Chicago and Americans opening their homes to help give a brother or sister a place to feel safe.

We fear, among other things, of course, that our country can't sustain this. That's certainly true, and this crisis is a wake-up call and a scandal, exposing layers of incompetence, lawlessness and indifference in our government and culture when it comes to immigration. It's an issue that's used as a political battering ram, as pastors who see the human fallout daily have long pled for civic responsibility and human decency.

"Solidarity means taking responsibility for those in trouble," St. John Paul II wrote in 1996. "For Christians, the migrant is not merely an individual to be respected in accordance with the norms established by law, but a person whose presence challenges them and whose needs become an obligation for their responsibility. 'What have you done to your brother?' The answer should not be limited to what is imposed by law, but should be made in the manner of solidarity."

Oh, Brother, help us, if we cannot see we cannot see through to the heart and the urgency. Our laws, our rhetoric, our indifference -- and our Twitter reflexes -- are not worthy of who we say we are as Americans.

Exactly. People are fed up. They are seeing their entire way of life go up in smoke due to the idiots running the government. The border crisis is just a symptom of it.

Obama id following the strategy pioneered by Hugo Chavez to import illiterate foreigners alter the electoral demographics of his country to build an enough of electoral majority of government dependents that he could manipulate his way into a dictatorship.

He used this to destroy Venezuela and to loot the country to the tune of $2 Billion.

In the process he co opted and destroyed the Catholic Church.

Obama is the most aggressively anti christian leader the United States has ever has and he is actively working to destroy Christianity in this country.

The Church needs to look at the big picture and understand that the invasion of the US by illegals is part of Obama’s plan to destroy not just America, the Christianity and the Church as well.

This is what liberalism and progressivism does. It rips up the institutions and cultures that people have long upheld and respected (strangely except for those that are Islamic). Look at ANY of the respected institutions that have been infiltrated by liberal ideas and direction and you will see that institution's reputation and credibility in decline. This is what is happening with the papacy.

I simply don't care about the kids sneaking across the border. Americans have been asked to give for too damn long.

Its time for Washington to listen to us for a change.

Ok look, perhaps a bunch of you will flame me for the following but I have been struggling with this issue since it started to become an issue:

Background, my dad came over to the US shortly after being released from a Japanese concentration camp in China. His dad, my grandfather, was Belgian, his mom, my grandmother, was Russian. They lived in Tsing Tao when the Japanese invaded and everyone from an Allied country had to report to the concentration camp where they were imprisoned for 3 years. My dad became a citizen of the US when I was in my 30s.

OK, I am very conservative and a Catholic. I also know a little about laws. I believe there should be fewer laws. I believe the laws there are should be based on natural law. Passport laws and immigration laws are not based on natural law.

This earthly existence was created by God and is under attack by Satan. God created plenty for everybody, and Satan tells us there is a limited pie. That said, yes, I firmly believe in the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, both based on natural law.

If these people want to come here or if I want to go somewhere, fine, I do not have a problem with that. But if these people will not swear allegiance to the US Constitution, or act in ways that indicate disloyalty to the US Constitution, out they must go. And they must follow the law or out they must go.

Most of you maybe don’t realize this passport deal is mainly a post WWI phenom. US has too many laws and is making its population miserable with all of its ill conceived laws. Get rid of most of the laws. Repeal the intolerable taxation laws-this is the crux of the problem.

So, call me whatever, but I am a Catholic, conservative, Latin Mass Constitutionalist. Not a socialist. Not Communist. Not Democrat.

Just telling it the way I see it.

Ms. Lopez undoubtedly out of misguided loyalty to the church is just a papal lemming blindly supporting the Pope’s call on Americans to support their own Obama-led suicide.

One cannot help the poor when dead — which will be the result of this invasion orchestrated by Obama to destroy America if it is not stopped.

Turning over the wealth and culture of a country to benefit a few temporarily until there is no more to receive because the country is destroyed, is not a God’s plan for a God-fearing country.

Socialism never results in equal prosperity, it only results equal misery.

There is no one, I dare say, on this forum that for a few days of turn around time wouldn’t contend hard for the few little ones, toddlers and babes in arms, and the little boys and little girls, who are being pushed out of their homes and countries of origin to be herded or shuttled across our border, if they survive the train ride or the foot trip or the evil characters around them.

They do need loving care for what, maybe seven days to RECOVER, before they are safely sent back home.

O’Malley must be one of those Marxist Catholics, who convolutes our disdain for LONG TERM care of these little ones, and tries to inject that disdain into slandering us for “heartlessness” even though it’s such an obious lie.

Short term care before return, yes.
A welfare check, NO.

We all know a racket when we see one. O’Malley is in on it, apparently.

They are minors. That’s why they’re allowed in - some rule Obama called.

They cannot be turned away because of that. So they are not choosing a better life, some adult chose to put them on a train through Mexico... for a better life for the child? Where’s the evidence of that? Anyway the child cannot choose this he is a minor.

Those who are not minors are here for what? Who are they? Where and what circumstances did they come from?

That matters. I don’t give asylum in my home to gang members nor men recently nor at any time released from prison or who could have been

Nor any stranger

The catechism states that we catholics are not to break the laws in the country we live in. And that we are not to abet in allowing illegal immigrants to enter and take up settlement and take our resources, and the catechism offers the reasoning that with that depletion of resources, we will not have resources for our own country nor for people in need including legitimate immigrants who come here for asylum

And if the pope, my pope, or anyone else says we are a rich country, I say we are certainly not, at $17 trillion in debt, and, given obama’s record of spending and lying, it could be very much greater than that

This writer likely had not checked the catechism to find out what he’s talking about, nor questioned whether the USCCB is doing the same

Simple google search. What the catechism says about illegal immigration

Here’s just one of many responses.

Jimmy skis name came up. He is a theologian. You can check what he has to say

This is the USCCB official rule which they themselves could effort to check

I agree with you, it’s just that citizenship via INVASION is not Natural Law, nor acceptable for those of us who still respect this country as we do our own homes.

We have always been a generous immigrant nation with laws on the books that are generous and reasonable, but what we are seeing now is TACTICAL MARXISM, not Natural Law nor is it Reason.

Immediate care should not be turned in to LAWLESS automatic citizenship, or permanent residency to fill the Marxist ballot boxes.

I believe this is a racket and a scam operation to test our will to survive as a nation.

Care, yes, but turn them ALL around by next Friday and send them home to their momma, or we become them right here in the USA.

"I would ... like to draw attention to the tens of thousands of children who migrate alone, unaccompanied, to escape poverty and violence."

Ah, the Pope is wrong. The are coming for amnesty, welfare, free everything in the Land of Uncle Sugar. Let's send them to the Vatican and see what the Swiss Guard and the Pope do.

And the Throwaway Society, who's throwing the kids away? Huh.

Also, with Obama it's lies all the way down. Apparently, they've left out that its Families coming here, not unaccompanied minors, they've lied about that to gain sympathy for the "children". The Pope fell right into the trap, attacks the innocent people minding their own business and tells others what to do that the Catholic Church is not willing to do itself.

Let’s hear some tough talk from the Pope about the corrupt, venal CULTURES south of the border that keep people poor, ignorant, and desperate.

More dangerous than all the diseases they are bringing is this culture they are bringing with them.

The Marxist Catholics never address the Catechism rule for respecting laws of nations and their borders.

Material possessions does not define wealth, or cas in the bank. The Catechism does define wealth either.

We are trading in China exchanges because we are now owned by China, who are also one of many oil rich countries are buying up our real estate and institutions.

Implying that the USA is wealthy is a false accusation in current times.

That's a good point. It would be worthwhile for all Catholics -- and the Pope and Magesterium in particular -- to ponder on this thought:

Why are so many thousands of families in historically Catholic countries piling their children into freight trains to have them migrate to a country that has become one of the most secular, hedonistic and nihilistic cultures on the planet?
