Fortune hunting in the USA finally looked good enough that they were willing to make the trek. That’s all that changed.
First of all, I don’t believe they made the trek. Otherwise their clothes would be tattered and they’d be emaciated. In other words, they’d look like Confederate soldiers in GONE WITH THE WIND.
