U.S. attorney general wades into Wisconsin voter ID court battle

The U.S. Justice Department plans to get involved in Wisconsin’s voter ID lawsuit, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a recent interview.

“We have already filed suit in Texas and North Carolina,” Holder said. “I expect that we are going to be filing in cases that are already in existence in Wisconsin as well as in Ohio.”

Holder’s comments were made in an interview with ABC News that aired Sunday. Holder’s office confirmed the statement but would not elaborate on what kind of action was planned. Wisconsin’s Republican attorney general, J.B. Van Hollen, criticized Holder’s comments.

“He should focus on the law and not his, or the president’s, personal beliefs,” Van Hollen said in a statement. “At a time when an immigration crisis is rattling the nation, the attorney general is choosing to spend taxpayer money to meddle in a state law that does nothing more than ask a voter to show a photo ID.” Earlier this year President Barack Obama, a Democrat, said “the right to vote is threatened today — in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago.”

Wisconsin’s 2011 law requiring voters to present an approved photo identification at the polls is being challenged in both state and federal court. The ACLU of Wisconsin and the League of United Latin American Citizens of Wisconsin filed separate federal suits saying it violates the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act. Earlier this year U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman struck down the law, saying it discriminates against minorities, who are more likely not to have an ID and could face hurdles in trying to obtain one. He also said defenders of the law hadn’t provided evidence that voter impersonation was a problem.

Van Hollen has asked for Adelman’s decision to be put on hold while the case is heard by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Supporters of the law say it’s a common-sense requirement that protects the integrity of elections. Larry Dupuis, a lawyer for the ACLU of Wisconsin, said he welcomed the U.S. Attorney General getting involved in the case.

“The government does carry a fair amount of weight in the courts of appeals,” Dupuis said.

The ACLU didn’t ask Holder to intervene, Dupuis said, though it wouldn’t be surprising if he does, or files an amicus brief in the case, given the Justice Department’s involvement in other voter ID cases.

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected Holder’s initial challenge to Texas’ voter ID law last year, striking down sections of the Voting Rights Act. A second challenge based on the same section of the law that is being argued in the Wisconsin case has not been resolved.

Why do you need ID to visit the white house?

Why is there a fence around the white house?

Someone from the Supreme Court ought to tell Holder that it ruled that requiring photo identification is legal. And if it is not legal, then the TSA requiring photo ID before boarding a plane should be illegal as well. And also tell him that good old black controlled South Africa requires all of it citizens to present a photo ID to prove who they are before they vote.

It is racist to prevent Eric Holder’s people from voting multiple times.

We lived in an upper middle class all white neighborhood in Lenexa, Kansas during the early 1980’s. Then someone sold their house to a Black family. Shortly after they moved to the neighborhood they bought two white dogs and added a chain link fence around their back yard in spite of the fact that the Association rules stipulated wooden fences if you chose to have one. Before they added their fence the backyards all formed a huge open oval and the kids played football and baseball there.

Rather an “in your face” move.

Perhaps we should use the language provided by Holder in his brief to question the Constitutionality of requiring ID at airports. Equality under the law, etc. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

the Obamites are going to set the all time record for “got their butts kicked in federal court”. But they don’t seem to care.

The old saw that white people are conspiring to keep black folks down has... well it has morphed. They actually still are, and the group of white people doing that are still generally called Democrats.
