Protests from local elected officials in Maryland this weekend forced the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) to cancel its plans to send illegal immigrant children to an Army Reserve center in Westminster, which is about 35 miles from Baltimore.
Maryland Democrat Gov. Martin O'Malley said illegal immigrant children flooding across the border should be considered "refugees" and all be given asylum status, but after Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) publicized the federal government's last-minute plans to sneak illegal immigrant children into Maryland, there was considerable blowback. HHS backed off, citing things like insufficient access to drinking water at the facility.
In a Monday appearance on WBAL radio in Baltimore, Harris said he found out late Thursday evening about the Obama administration's plans and "hit the ground running on Friday morning" to stop it from happening.
"We have to send a very clear message to HHS that this is crazy," Harris said.
Harris also acknowledged that until the message gets sent clearly that illegal immigrant children will not be given amnesty or be allowed to remain in the country for years, billions of dollars in more government spending will not solve what he called an "emergency" at the border.

I moved to Wisconsin and then Minnesota in the late 1980s and was frustrated by how smug and superior (and accepting) through their ignorance they were, on immigration.
Events like this that are emerging from this Obama debacle, are bound to be getting reported in local news in various non-border states that are fighting and rejecting these transfers, perhaps it will wake up non-border voters to the immigration problems.

If the liberals are so proud of how we are compassionate to the kids and all that, then why the secrecy about where the kids are going? Why wouldn’t a liberal state such as Maryland welcome the kids to prove how liberal they are???
I think MD is a great place for these illegals! They voted in a dem/progressive/commie governor. They’re as blue as you can get. They voted for this...let ‘em have it.

The area Harris represents did not vote for either O'Malley or Bambi.
Trying to paint the conservatives as rasists, Comrade OweMalley advised that they not go there because it is a conservative area and they may be harrassed.
Isn’t it amazing that Andy Harris has to fight for the people in that district when it is not his own.
The rats sure are quite on this one.
Part of Harris’ district is on the Western Shore, not exactly sure where, but it does extend nearly to Baltimore.
It goes into Cecil, Harford and Baltimore counties as well as part of AA Co.
