Thomas Ravenel files petition for US Senate (independent against Graham in SC)

COLUMBIA — Reality TV-star and former S.C. Treasurer Thomas Ravenel filed his petition to run for U.S. Senate as an independent.

Ravenel, of Charleston, submitted 16,469 signatures to the S.C. Election Commission on Monday. He needs 10,000 certified signatures to make the ballot. The certification process will take about a month, an election official said.

If certified, Ravenel will face U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-Seneca, S.C. Sen. Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, and Columbia Libertarian Victor Kocher in November’s general election.

Ravenel recently was the star of Southern Charm, a Bravo reality-television show filmed in Charleston. The former state treasurer left office in 2007 after pleading guilty to felony cocaine charges.

Ravenel ran for U.S. Senate in 2004 as a Republican and finished third out of six candidates.

Ravenel said he would provide voters with a “true choice in November, not a false choice between two increasingly parties that have been bought and paid for that are ideologically alike.”

"We welcome anyone with serious ideas to the race and look forward to debating the issues that matter,” said Hutto’s campaign manager Lachlan McIntosh. “Lindsey Graham loves being a Washington big shot but he's lost touch with folks in South Carolina. It appears voters will have several choices with whom to replace him with come November."

I'd vote for the libertarian over the drug trafficker. But I'd vote for the drug trafficker over Juan McCain's Nancy Boy.

I suspect we may see some Democrats elected to the Senate from “safe” states come fall. KY is likely to go, and I would not be surprised to see GA go too, especially if the GOP-e candidate (masquerading as an outsider) is our nominee.

The election will be a tossup. There will be people who could not bring themselves to vote for either Graham or the democrat so they’ll vote for Ravenel or somebody else. And there will be those who will vote for the democrat to make sure that Graham is ousted.

I don’t think any of the polls will be accurate in this race, and we won’t know what will happen till November. On top of this, Graham is very well known to be for “immigration reform” and that’s blowing up right now.

I’ll need to learn more about this Tom Ravenel. When I see his last name, I immediately think about that long classical guitar concerto by Ravel, titled; BOLERO. It was in the movie 10, with Bo Derek. I still have not forgotten all the fuss and excitment she caused with those long blond cornrow braids, still wet and dripping from her after-brunch ocean swim. Oops, I wandered off topic again. Now, if I could just find that pocket compass, I’ll be heading true north again.

“I think you can say goodbye to Sweet Linda.”

I would love to! He’s going to need to spend the rest of his “warchest.” His defeat would be such a glorious blow!

“I suspect we may see some Democrats elected to the Senate from “safe” states come fall.”

North Carolina should have been an easy GOP pickup. However Hagan is running +3 in the polls now. Tillis is not inspiring and is under relentless assault from every public interest group, the Democrat party, and the media.

That's what I thought back on June 10th. My fellow Carolinians let me down and re-elected Linda. Too many low info voters here in SC.

The odds will not be in Linda’s favor if Ravenal gets on the ballot.
Ravenal will get most conservative votes.
The RAT will get RAT votes
And Linda will get the RINO votes.

Problem is, there are not enough RINO votes to save Linda.
The odds will change Big Time if Ravenal gets on the ballot.

Ravenal will take most conservative votes, leaving Graham with only
the RINO and gay voters.
And there not enough of either in SC to save Graham.

What is the law in South Carolina? Can Linda with the General Election with a plurality as low as, say, 35%? Or is there a run-off required at some low point?

Good question. I don’t know the law. Maybe one of our SC Freepers
can weigh in.

Agreed. I hate to be one of those that metaphorically cut off our noses to spite our faces, but it is time for Graham and McConnell ( and "Thad" ) to go, even if it is because they were hoisted by their Own Petard. We may not take the Senate, but the E-GOP will pay a brutally high political price for what they are doing to their Conservative Base and what they did in Mississippi...

But will they learn? Nah, that is the worst part..

“The odds will change Big Time if Ravenal gets on the ballot.”

I’m looking forward to it. And also, while the democrats love Graham, they’d rather have a real democrat in the seat so they will go all out..

Wouldn’t it be beautiful if Graham, a two-term, prominent republican senator, came in third?

Unless the rule has changed, winner takes all during the general election.

This is all I could find about the general election.
SECTION 7-13-2210. General or special election.

If any general election or special election, other than a nonpartisan municipal election, results in a tie vote and no candidate withdraws, the election officials who conducted the tie election shall conduct a runoff election to break the tie two weeks following the tie election. In the tie-breaking runoff, the laws of this State apply, mutatis mutandi. If the date for the tie-breaking runoff falls on a legal holiday, it must be held on the same day of the first week following which is not a legal holiday.

I know this Guy:

He was a few years behind me in school and if it was not for his daddy he never would have graduated. It was a real education to see so many strings pulled to get him though. Not that he could not hack it academically, he could, but there is no I in team.

He is only about one thing; himself, He is simply one of the most selfish people I have ever met.

Don’t buy the Hype this is the last person I would ever vote for EVER.
