NYT Pentagon Correspondent: Government-Media ‘Dysfunctional Marriage’ Is Necessary ‘For the Kids’
newsbusters.org ^ | 7/13/14 | Tom Blumer

Well, this explains a lot.

A Justin Lynch column ("Wartime Press") originally posted at the Weekly Wonk and republished at Time.com with a more foreboding title ("Bloggers, Surveillance and Obama’s Orwellian State") really ends up being an attempted justification by those Lynch quoted for having a close alliance between the government and "journalists" with "professional standards." Thom Shanker, the Pentagon correspondent for the New York Times, gets the award for the most Orwellian quote in the litter, which will come after the jump. Its prelude is his belief that "The government really needs to get its message out to the American people, and it knows that the best way to do that is by using the American news media." Excerpts follow.

What a surprise it is to learn after all these years that the news media's job is to serve as a conduit for the government's message — and it gets worse (headline and subhead are Time's; bolds and numbered tags are mine):

This type of thinking is just plain sick. And of course we all know it only applies when a democrat is in office.

A side corollary to this is advertising. Seems to me that the federal and state governments should NOT put taxpayer dollars into any form of advertising... it smacks of trying to mold the electorate and has many levels of conflicting interests. Govt advertising has been bothersome for decades; always irked me to hear “advertising council” sponsored ads, no matter what the subject.

In other words “we don’t have a ministry of propaganda, so the US Media are doing the job for us”

Yes, The Germans used propagandists as well as the Japanese - effectively in many ways.

Shakespeare’s line about “.....all the lawyers...” should be changed to “...all the journalists...” [Yes, I know the context in which he wrote that, he actually was putting lawyers in a better light than we commonly use his line for today. He’s dead, I changed it’s meaning - he can just deal with it or STFU.]

“The government really needs to get its message out to the American people, and it knows that the best way to do that is by using the American news media.”

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” -Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany Propagandist in Chief

These people are just paid liars for the Democrat Party. Just as Goebbels was for the NAZI Party.

The only difference was that Goebbels was more honest.

And Goebbels never said the Fuhrer gave him a tingle up his leg.

Newspapers often run ads that look like news copy... but at the top of the page they'll print, "Paid Advertisement". Advertisers play off the the 'objectivity' and credibility of their local newspaper, without the paper selling their credibility. (This is common in throwaways like Parade magazine)

The government could do a similar thing - BUY paid ad space for the equivalent of press releases that mimic news copy. But with the printed disclaimer: "Paid Government Advertising".

This solution works on several levels. It frees up idiots like Justin Lynch ( Orwellian Police State aficionado ) to write PAID propaganda FOR the government, gives needed revenue to newspapers, and draws a firm line between propaganda and 'news'.

Good point. The House should put a strict ban on all use of FedGov funds for advertising of any kind.

Sometimes I think the real culprit is our failure to teach kids to think. The schools are too afraid these days that the kids will end up thinking the “wrong” thing, so they have abandoned critical thinking as part of the curriculum.

When my father taught me to cook, he didn’t actually teach me to cook, he taught me how to learn to cook. He handed me the ingredients and the utensils, and after several tries I would get it right. That kind of experience gives you the confidence to know you can learn something, to know you can come to the right answer.

In the schools, conservatives have abandoned progressive education, which does not mean progressing toward being progressives politically. It was a method of teaching that promotes true democracy and the means to reach a good answer.

We’ve lost something so deep that complaining about media having become the mouthpiece of government is not the real answer. People have to learn to think things out for themselves, not just join a group or a party and then spout their answers.
