"Zimmerman found out to his chagrin that even though he couldn't retreat through the sidewalk, that fact still didn't protect him from a malicious prosecution."

So what? What does that have to do with whether retreat is required? Zimmerman wasn't prosecuted because he failed to retreat.

"And remember, I was talking about confrontations, of which your "retreat from a deadly threat" scenario is a very small subset."

No, you brought up the duty to retreat. You said it was required. I simply pointed out that it wasn't in most states. I don't know why you've confused that with all this other commentary. It could have been left at that.

No, you brought up the duty to retreat. You said it was required.

It's required in my state, and in 40% of the states of the union. When you attempt to make a dismissive blanket statement like "but most states do not have a legal obligation to retreat from a deadly threat. Most states are Stand Your Ground states", you mislead people from Duty To Retreat states, EVEN THOUGH YOUR STATEMENT IS TRUE. They could read your dismissive post, and get wrong thoughts about what to do in an ordinary confrontation, little alone your extreme "retreat from a deadly threat" scenario, which I wasn't talking about. The concealed carry instructors in my state go over this in excruciating detail. They like their students, and don't want them to go to prison.

As I recall, even your own state [California] is rather fussy about where & how a peasant can Stand His Ground. Maybe the "deadly threat" will give you a moment to consult the text of the California Stand Your Ground law to make sure you're clear on when you can use it...

So what? What does that have to do with whether retreat is required? Zimmerman wasn't prosecuted because he failed to retreat.

"...the State [of Florida] filed an affidavit of probable cause, stating that Zimmerman profiled and confronted Martin and shot him to death while Martin was committing no crimes."

I'm pretty sure that "confronted" is the opposite of "retreated".
