Why would you applaud the muscle memory that enables athletes to do amazing things and not see the implications of that same “memory” when triggered by an incident in a dark theater?

Because we have these handy little override functions called "free will" and "conscience" that keep people from being robots at the mercy of their conditioning. It's part of living in a free society and deserving that freedom.

I can’t believe that someone is DEFENDING the “confrontation and escalation” training that the militarized American police forces are apparently receiving.

Habit beats free will every time. Habit does not reside in the areas of the brain accessed by conscious thought. That’s the issue here.
