Those “draconian budget cuts” amounts to about $398 per resident.

How will they ever survive??

Is the Camden Public Library and the Camden County Library System the same entity?

What about Rutgers? How much they contribute to the city?

Camden is yet another example of the consequences of Democrat policies since before 1932.

That's 100% accurate. Yet, not far away in the same state, the city of Sea Girt, is run by Republican Mayor Ken Farrell. Under GOP leadership, that city enjoys a crime rate that's nearly nil and a median income of alsmost $103,000. In the 2004 election, George Bush commanded nearly 77% of the vote, proving that Republican leadership yields prosperity. Camden should wise up and learn the lessons from its neighbor to the east. Electing DemonRATS invariably leads to decay and despair.

I remember Camden from the 1960s when it was not much different from the description contained in this article, although concededly not as advanced at a time when the revolution of the Great Society began.

If, as the sentiment on this thread declares, the decline of Camden was caused by leftist programs like the Great Society, what was it about Camden, Detroit and elsewhere that required or at least justified the Great Society programs?

The collapse of the cities is a warning to the politicians of both parties who have spent beyond means what is to come because they have refused to spend less and balance budgets.

All those GOPe ideas like TARP in 2008 and Medicare Part D in 2004 have done this country no good.....

How are the guns “easily purchased” in PA, with its “lax gun laws”.

I live in Texas, and we have to follow the FEDERAL gun laws and that means a BACKGROUND CHECK if you buy from a licensed dealer - and that is a serious check. Yes, you don’t need one for a private sale, but there are not a whole lot people that will sell privately to gang members, since it is (or can be) a felony, if you know the person is a felon.

Seems some other dynamic is at work there...wonder what it could be.

The proposed slashing of the public library budget by almost two-thirds has left the viability of the library system in doubt.

Oh. I'm not going to say it.

Burlington, VT has been run by Democrats since then, and it's very pleasant.

Are you sure it's a party thing?

As a NJ resident if we could remove Newark, Trenton and Camden from the rest of the state,it truly would be the “Garden State”.

Camden is roughly the same as East St. Louis for all the reasons listed here.

The river, if fully developed, could be draw, but that isn’t going to happen. Philly, on the other side, has pockets of prosperity but is headed in the same direction for the same reasons. It’ll just take longer.

Here’s another socialist/criminal induces paradise…

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-06-07/death-and-decay-detroit-real-time-seen-streets

For anyone familiar with Detroit, I got off I-75 southbound into Detroit @ 8-mile (just entering the northern border of the city) 2 days ago because of a traffic jam on the freeway. From 8-mile I went to John R and took it south into the city until it stopped at Ferris (then I went right on Ferris to Woodward and proceeded south downtown). The side streets (looking left and right) going down Ferris were as bad or worse than the pics, above. Some livable homes but many that were burnt out, boarded up or grass and weeds so tall you could barely see the front of the house. There were lots of homes close together and I did not notice many vacant lots. It was raining Tuesday and somehow that seemed to fit the scene. It was also bad enough to bring a tear to my eyes as I remember growing up in and around Detroit in the 50’s 60’s 70’s.
