GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy, who is challenging Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) in one of this year’s most competitive Senate races, revealed late Thursday that his 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock and is due later this summer.

Cassidy’s campaign revealed the news with a one-paragraph statement to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, published late Thursday afternoon as the July Fourth holiday weekend began.

“Earlier this year, Laura and I learned we will become grandparents this summer,” Cassidy, 56, said in the statement. “Our children have been the greatest blessing of our lives and we welcome our grandchild as a joyous addition to our family. Our daughter now faces a more challenging future than her peers. She has our unconditional love and support.”

His daughter is a rising senior at a high school in Baton Rouge.

Love isn’t the issue. This has been studied forever. Humans need a mother and a father. Children not raised in families (mother & father) generally are handicapped by it. Once the children suffer, the society they inhabit suffer. Inner city mothers love their children, it doesn’t change the outcome. Money isn’t a substitute for a mother and father.

Thanks for explaining that, I was wondering about it too. Is that a regional expression? I’ve never heard it before.

It's commonly used in college sports recruiting, that's where I first learned it.

Now THAT's getting out in front of it!

I’d only eschew voting for Mr. Cassidy if HE HIMSELF got a teenage girl pregnant.

Of course children are better off having a mother and a father who both love them, but a child raised in a loving family with a mother and supportive grandparents can be just as well off. It is very possible that this young girl will find someone to love both her and her baby, especially with a family support system. Taking your theory a little further, if a mother of young children were to get a divorce, the children would be better off if she gave them up for adoption. Hog wash. What about widows? I guess they should give up their young babies too.

Ahem, when God weighs in saying that He is love... maybe we had BETTER consider it an issue. Just sayin’.

I would second the fear here... again in those terms, “religious fruitcakes.”

That isn’t the same as worshipful people.

When our worship ceases to be an empty shell, it will look for ways to help people in unfortunate circumstances, even if those circumstances were partly their own fault.

>> the [Left] holds Republicans to 1950s standards

The Left has a deranged view of everything including its benighted perception of conservatives as facile automatons.

Your failure to understand doesn't relieve the situation of it's reality. Like I said this has been studied for decades. Children of divorce are damaged by it , the logical solution to destructive behavior it is to discourage it not to delete the only parent left. Widows are not single parents. They and their results cluster with other married parents.

Children "raised in a loving family with a mother and supportive grandparents can be just as well off."

Except they aren't. They are outliers that do well but in general what you get is inner city America.

That children need a mother and a father cannot be equated to an “emotional support structure” . That's the kind of reasoning behind gay marriage and gay adoptions.

Love isn’t a substitute for the other needs of a child. Even God didn’t have his only Son raised by a single mother. Just sayin’.

It takes two to tango and the young mans life is radically changed as well.

Odds are he's 17 as well and won't be in the picture.

Did no one explain the concept of birth control to her?

His daughter took an anti-abortion stance and chose life over death.

Also an anti-birth control stance apparently.

If liberal wackos choose to pick on her, they must chose death over life in their argument.

If they raise it at all it'll be to criticize the 'abstinence over birth control' argument. If he takes any flack over this it'll be from his more socially conservative supporters. At the end of the day I doubt it impacts the election at all.

But the election is not the important issue. A baby is about to be born to a 17 year old who almost certainly lacks the maturity to be a mother. Statistics show that it's the baby who will suffer in the long run. I hope this is the exception to the rule.

“This isn’t l950.”

What’s that got to do with anything, my sister in law got pregnant at 16 in 1951.

“Your failure to understand doesn’t relieve the situation of it’s reality.”

I guess you think Bristol Palin should have given her child away. Her baby is much better off without his father in the picture.

If anything happens to Bristol, her parents are there for her son. Bristol will meet a good guy. She’s bright and beautiful, but made a mistake. There are lots of men who become great step-fathers.

“That children need a mother and a father cannot be equated to an “emotional support structure” . That’s the kind of reasoning behind gay marriage and gay adoptions.”

That’s stupid to compare a woman keeping her baby to gay marriage and adoptions.

“Widows are not single parents. They and their results cluster with other married parents.”

After bereavement, widows will try to find someone to share their life with, just as single women. They may at first hang around with married friends, but eventually they will be moving in the single circuit. It’s only natural.

I don’t know why you are dismissing the grandparents. The grandfather will be there as a male role model in this case. I’ve known many grandparents who have helped the children and grandchildren.

Some folks(parents) wont even contemplate the possibility that their little girl would be having sex. I will be watching mine like a hungry hawk.
