Arthur becomes the first hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic season. Independence Day travelers and revelers up and down the U.S. Atlantic coast are eying the path of the storm. Forecast models are in good agreement that Hurricane Arthur will dampen July 4th festivities along the N.C. Outer Banks. Mandatory evacuation of the Outer Banks has begun. Warm waters from the Gulf Stream are adding fuel to the storm development.

As bad as the storms are that come through the Federal govt./park service causes much more grief, aggravation and loss of income to locals. They close the beach for bird nesting all the time. Don't allow this don't allow that and between the epa and the bird watchers its a nightmare all the time.
NC has no political representation for the locals on the outer banks,its sad.

Weather people finally have something they can dolt on for the next 4-5 days — provided the thing doesn't weaken.

Last season didn't give them much to be excited about. They are hoping for a better new season.

In 1959 our family survived “Gracie” while my Father was at Shaw Field. It almost destroyed the mobile home in which we were living. We had to flee the home in the worst of the winds and go to Shaw for shelter. In October we transferred to Japan to Yokota AFB and were living in the “paddies” when a Super typhoon hit the area, destroying our house and again we had to flee in the midst of the storm to the base for cover. I have empathy for those that are going to endure the hurricanes each season. I was only seven years old when I went through those two and have endured many others but those two's memory is entrenched.

The name of the SC hurricane was Gracie but I had remembered it as Gloria.

Will Florida get any of it? rains? Doesn’t look like.

Florida is in the clear now - my wife is now down there on the Space Coast and said their effects were limited to a couple of squall lines (like that never happens during a Florida Summer anyway) and a bit more breeze.

There are some advisories about rip currents, but even that shouldn't be a big deal - perhaps so up along the Georgia coastline now.

Models now in tight agreement: landfall tonight somewhere along the corridor from Cape Lookout to Cape Hatteras. That angle of arrival - almost matching the contour of those barrier islands - is gonna overwash that entire stretch of beach as water is pushed in... erosion is going to be the biggest problem there.

Last 1-2 hours of satellite pics looked to show a weakening eye as dry air was circulating in... hope that continues, though it does have all day to recover from that. Still wouldn’t be surprised if it was a high-Cat 1 by landfall.

We were in the OBX in late April and the road just north of Rodanthe flooded and was closed just before we arrived and also for a time while we were there after a heavy thunderstorm.

The Big Storm of that era was 1954 Hazel. 1000 people perished from Haiti to Canada. Destroyed much development along NC/SC coast.

Anyone know how Jacksonville fared? We flew home from there (Mayo Clinic) Tuesday, just in time to miss Arthur. I think I’ll take the CA shakers over hurricanes. Didn’t much care for the “regular” storms in JAX where you can’t see the car in front of you. Love the town, just not used to the weather.
