Florida sheriff defends acquisition of surplus MRAP Published June 30, 2014 Associated Press

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. – A decision by one Panhandle sheriff's office to purchase a military surplus MRAP is being criticized by some residents.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that the Walton County Sheriff's office bought the mine-resistant and ambush-resistant MRAP for just the $2,500 cost of delivery.

Sheriff Mike Adkinson says the heavy-duty vehicle will protect his officers in dangerous situations. But some residents told the newspaper that the military vehicle is an unnecessary show of force in their largely rural county.

MRAPs have a gross vehicle weight around 38,000 pounds loaded, depending on model, etc.

Soon we will hear cries for more tax money to repair parking lots and roads damaged by these behemoths.

Yeah the principle of a shape charge...and maybe married to a limpet type mine and you’re in business.

It was purchased by the Walton County sheriff, so pop. ~59,000. Not that this changes anything.

It’s Destin and environs, including Eglin AFB. If I were a local voter, I’d be insistently asking the sheriff for how many incidents there have been in the last 10 years - no, 20 - where such a vehicle would have made a difference, and details on each. And looking into who funds this guy, and the mechanism.

“Are you going to have them drive around in tanks next? “

Make them available and these jerks will get a hold of them. They must think all those manpads we “lost” in Iraq are going to turn up here, or they are just into military “toys.”

I’ve been to Defuniak Springs—this is completely ridiculous and the Sheriff should lose his job for it. I guess a good place to start would be to reduce the Sheriff’s budget by an amount equal to the purchase + operation of the MRAP, since the department clearly has more money than sense.

During one of the uprisings in a Soviet satellite, insurgents riveted two pie pans, face to face, and placed the empty arrangement in the road.

It stopped tank traffic for several hours, until the fake could be investigated.

It doesn't even take anything dangerous to throw sand in those gears.

For $2,500, if I were police chief I’d just say that it will look great in the 4th of July parade every year but we really don’t anticipate using it all that much.

Video report:

Veterans Arrested For Anti-Obama Facebook Posts – Police Militarized For Veterans

June 18, 2014

Veterans are being arrested by Secret Service for making anti-Obama Facebook posts, sometimes the very next day after creating a post – a practice which has been going on for quite some time.

All the while, our police force is being militarized at an alarming rate, with veterans being cited as one reason why. This is revealed in a statement made last month by Sgt. Dan Downing of the Morgan County, Ind. Sheriff’s Department, he stated “The weaponry is totally different now that it was in the beginning of my career, plus, you have a lot of people who are coming out of the military that have the ability and knowledge to build IEDs and to defeat law enforcement techniques.”

DHS has specific programs to silence veterans, such as Operation Vigilant Eagle, which was started in 2009. See more on this program below.

We saw the Washington Times last month report on a memo detailing Obama’s plan to use the military against citizens. Of course strategically it makes sense that in any such war, the first targets would be those who can defeat local law enforcement, organize others into field-ready teams, and train the other patriots in the finer points of combat: our veterans...

Little Rock, AR is now one of the most dangerous cities in America. Our CITIZENS need MRAPS more than the cops do. Luckily we have a pro CCW prosecutor and pro-gun police dept. (at least the rank and file).
