There were fewer than 200,000 weddings in Italy last year, the lowest level since records began, national statistics agency Istat said on Thursday.
There were 197,091 marriages in Italy last year, amounting to 3.3 per thousand and the lowest ever documented in Italian historym according to Istat.
The figure fell by around 10,000 on the previous year - to 207,138 - and was far from the 246,611 happy couples tying the knot in 2008.
Marriage was still, however, proving popular in southern Italy, with a rate of 3.9 per thousand compared to 2.9 in the north.
Wedding vows were at their peak in the southern regions of Calabria, Campania and Sicily, with 4.1 marriages per thousand taking place last year. Italians in the central Emilia-Romagna region were seen to be falling out of love with the ceremony, as just 2.7 per thousand got married last year.
Overall, the figures also showed that Italians are increasingly opting for civil rather than religious ceremonies.
Between 2008 and 2013 the share of civil ceremonies went up from 36.8 percent to 43.1 percent, although the majority of weddings in Italy are still religious services.
That is sad...because there is NOTHING like an Italian Wedding!
Nick are Italians “shack up” without marriage license right
Just living alone
I read that a lot of Italian men live with their mothers, even if they have children.
I see mama boys LOL!
welcome to the inevitable consequences of the welfare state
This is what happens when the meaning and definition of marriage is cheapened, destroyed and meaningless.
Does that mean Monica Bellucci is available?
A quick rundown of the catholic teaching, Humanae Vitae, points out that contraception is logically considered to be behind this
http://www3.nd.edu/~afreddos/courses/264/popepaul.htm
From the article:
‘The Pope first noted that the widespread use of contraception would “lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality.” That there has been a widespread decline in morality, especially sexual morality, in the last 25 years, is very difficult to deny. The increase in the number of divorces, abortion, our-of-wedlock pregnancies, and venereal diseases should convince any skeptic that sexual morality is not the strong suit of our age.’
Marriage protects women and children. Whatever name you call it by, it will not go away.
Gay union, and serial monogamy is pointless. It is what will die away.
Hubba hubba...
