The civil-rights struggles of the mid-20th century were liberalism at its best. The efforts culminated in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed racial discrimination in employment and education and ensured the ability of blacks to register and vote.
But what about the social policy and thinking that arose from the ruins of Jim Crow? Good intentions aside, which efforts have facilitated black advancement, and which efforts have impeded it?
Many liberals today don’t seem particularly interested in asking this question, even though 50 years into the war on poverty the picture isn’t pretty.
While gains have been made, significant racial disparities persist in some areas and black retrogression has occurred in others.
The black-white poverty gap has widened over the last decade and the poverty rate among blacks is no longer declining. The black-white disparity in incarceration rates today is larger than it was in 1960.
And the black unemployment rate has, on average, been twice as high as the white rate for five decades. In fact, black America has long been stuck in a severe recession. Between 1963 and 2012, annual black unemployment averaged 11.6%, while the average annual national unemployment rate during recessions over the same period was only 6.7%.
Confronted with these statistics, liberals continue to push for the same “solutions” that clearly haven’t worked before....

They’re not going to ever “stop” helping black Americans because they’re Democrats- and one thing that every Democrat has feared since Thomas Jefferson is an independent-thinking black man. That’s why Democrats kept them in slavery and forbade them to learn to read and write. That’s why Democrats lynched them and burned their churches down during Jim Crow. That’s why they started the so-called “War On Poverty” (newsflash-Poverty won).....strong, independent people reliant only on their friends and family and God, living their lives apart from Gubmint help, is like a Cross to a Vampire.
Where would all their jobs come from? They feed off the black, i.e., prisons, social workers, special teachers, grants, housing, etc. Their world would collapse.
The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was also Congress's show of support for the Supreme Court's Brown decisions. [1] The Brown v. Board of Education (1954), eventually led to the integration of public schools. Following the Supreme Court ruling, Southern whites in Virginia began a “Massive Resistance.” Violence against blacks rose there and in other states, as in Little Rock, Arkansas, where that year President Dwight D. Eisenhower had ordered in federal troops to protect nine children integrating a public school, the first time the federal government had sent troops to the South since Reconstruction.[2] There had been continued physical assaults against suspected activists and bombings of schools and churches in the South. The administration of Eisenhower proposed legislation to protect the right to vote by African Americans.
Democratic Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, an ardent segregationist, sustained the longest one-person filibuster in history in an attempt to keep the bill from becoming law. His one-man filibuster lasted 24 hours and 18 minutes; he began with readings of every state's election laws in alphabetical order. Thurmond later read from the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and George Washington's Farewell Address. His speech set the record for a Senate filibuster.[3] The bill passed the House with a vote of 285 to 126 (Republicans 167-19 for, Democrats 118-107 for) [4] and the Senate 72 to 18 (Republicans 43-0 for, Democrats 29-18 for).[5] President Eisenhower signed it on September 9, 1957.
Most liberals really don’t want to help they just want to assuage their white guilt.
ROFL The Dems were not the ones helping blacks in the Civil Rights Movement....it was Republicans. You can find all of that out at the Black Republicans Association website.
The bigger unreported issue is the true in-house effects of affirmative action.
In our present rush to create a new batch of citizens out of illegal immigrants, its not being discussed that as soon as a member of a racial minority is naturalized they will have more rights to employment and to gain contracts with public agencies than a native-born citizen who has paid taxes all his or her life to support those same agencies.
Hey Black people....are your cities nice and safe??? How about your neighborhoods??? How are your schools?? Do your kids know how to READ and WRITE PROPERLY and NOT EBONICS??? DO YOU CARE????
Can you go out and walk at night??? Other than a GOVERNMENT or HOSPITAL job, can you GET a JOB?? Can your KIDS find work??
When you blacks WAKE THE HELL UP and REALIZE what the DEMOCRATS have DONE TO YOU, all HELL is going to break loose......but ALAS.....you will probably NEVER wake up....sad as hell.
All the pandering should have stopped when one of them was crowned leader of the US.
You really need to have a good view of what you would help someone “to” before you can truly help that person.
Throwing money at things is no panacea. People can use money for all kinds of self defeating activities.
Until I am blue in the face, I keep on preaching a gospel view of things. That’s the only thing that will set people free. It’s funny that the only thing that made it spiritually possible for actual slaves to keep out of a blue funk, is now assiduously shunned by those who say that their slave history is gloomily overshadowing their lives. It’s like all of a sudden they don’t think God has anything better to do than damn America (and damn themselves with America).
But it didn’t: the King is now expected to be pandered to, and as just about all his ideas are atrocious, the wascally GOP is busy frustrating that idea, and a huge Gloom has set in.
I’m still not sure what is so grand about the “Civil Rights Act” Do whites have civil rights?
In addition what responsibility do blacks have in/for race relations or is it all on whites?
Liberals are NOT trying to help anyone, they just want to steal our money to buy their votes.
And what is sad about all of this is it is conservatives who share the morals qnd the religious beliefs of many blacks. Then the rats remind them that they are black first and a Christian second.
The more you treat somebody like a helpless loser the more they are going to act like a helpless loser.
But they need to keep helping so they can keep black America down permanently (demonstrating their compassion by doing so, of course.) They need a permanent and expanding underclass to keep themselves in power.
Democrats view black people as their property.
Are the problems chiefly with the blacks that are ancestors of slaves, are the problems chiefly with blacks from ocean nations, or are the problems chiefly from blacks immigrated from Europe that had no slavery background, or black immigrants escaping violence in the African continent? Are the problems universal, regardless of the background/length of time in America? And if not universal, shouldn't we be addressing the specific sectors that has the most issues ?
We can't begin to fix the problem until we find out where the problem lies.
What? Black Americans ARE Liberal.
This just makes no sense.
