Is the Gay Gene a myth? Scientists say homosexuality impossible to determine by DNA

CHICAGO – The results of a comprehensive scientific study released earlier this year suggest that homosexuality cannot be directly traced to a ‘gay gene,’ but is instead dependent on a variety of factors, including environmental and social influences.

Pro-homosexual activists have long claimed that homosexuality and abnormal “sexual orientations” are primarily caused by genetic factors. They argue that individuals with a hereditary “gay gene” are predisposed toward same-sex attractions and thus unable to appreciate traditional marriages.

However, scientific findings released earlier this year during the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago call this premise into question. During the meeting, Michael Bailey of Northwestern University unveiled comprehensive research results which suggest that genetics alone do not determine “sexual orientation.”

In his research, Bailey and other scientists examined the DNA of 400 men who described themselves as homosexual. Ultimately, the researchers concluded that homosexuality cannot be traced to specific genes.

“The genes were neither sufficient, nor necessary, to make any of the men gay,” wrote Ian Sample, science correspondent for The Guardian.

The findings show that it is impossible to accurately predict a person’s sexual behavior by solely examining DNA.

“The flawed thinking behind a genetic test for sexual orientation is clear from studies of twins, which show that the identical twin of a gay man, who carries an exact replica of his brother’s DNA, is more likely to be straight than gay,” The Guardian article continues. “That means even a perfect genetic test that picked up every gene linked to sexual orientation would still be less effective than flipping a coin.”

Alan Sanders, a Northwestern University professor who led the recent study, confirmed that the “gay gene” theory is largely unfounded.

“We don’t think genetics is the whole story,” Sanders stated, according to The Telegraph. “It’s not.”

Though the scientists maintained that genetics do at least partly influence sexual orientation, these recent findings undermine the belief that homosexuality is predetermined. Environmental factors, such as the absence of a father or an unhealthy domestic upbringing, might play significant roles.

Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association says the scientific findings show that homosexual behavior is ultimately an individual choice.

“Without a genetic causation, sexual preference in behavior is clearly a choice, a choice which no one is compelled to make,” Fischer wrote in a column last week. “And that choice can be evaluated in any number of ways, including whether or not it is good for human health and whether or not same-sex households are sub-optimal nurturing environments for vulnerable young children.”

“If homosexual conduct is ultimately a matter of choice,” Fischer continued, “then the homosexual lobby has nothing, because homosexual conduct is clearly harmful to human beings in any number of ways, not the least of which is serving as the leading cause of HIV/AIDS, which can leave young men disease-ridden and destined for an early grave.”

“I am not persuaded that genes are even a contributing factor,” he added. “But even if they are, the great news is that if individuals are not biologically predetermined to pursue the homosexual lifestyle, then change is possible as a matter of scientific fact. This leads to one simple, salient truth: there is hope for the homosexual.”

Why can’t Christians accept the obvious: homosexuality is part of God’s plan. If it isn’t, why does it exist?

Really? You think sodomy is God's plan, if this is the case why did He go out of his way to forbid it? Why did he destroy Sodom and Gomorrah?

Man sinned in the Garden and homosexuality is a sin that some CHOOSE to commit, this is Satan's plan.

The gay gene would cause a firestorm. What will you do with gay people who don’t have the gene?

That’s why we will just stay with the “born that way because I feel that way” belief because.......science.

Why can’t Christians accept the obvious: homosexuality is part of God’s plan. If it isn’t, why does it exist?

Here are some other things that exist. Are they part of God's plan, because they exist? Polio, ebola, cancer, eczema, pneumonia, scabies, addiction, leprosy, allergies, psoriasis, retinosis pigmentosa, Down syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, neurosis, psychosis...

God gave us free will. Temptations, obsessions and wrong actions that hurt others happen in this world because it is the domain of the devil, who lures us into sin and disorder. God will judge us for eternity for our response to the earthly situations into which we are born or thrown, and the choices we make.

Gays aren't the only ones who must channel their drives and limit their sexual actions. For instance, many heterosexuals are born with a high sex drive; but if they want to be in a right relationship to God, they confine it to marriage and do not give in to promiscuity, porn or rape, even if they are single, divorced or widowed.

Homosexuality almost always results from being raped as a child by a same sex family member or same sex friend of the family.

Just as celibacy is a decision by a man or a woman, so is homosexuality a DECISIION by a man or a woman.

I believe it is connected to the family, particularly the role of the mother in that family.

” To which another pundit replied by pointing out that blood doesn’t come in molecules. “

Molecules are the basic building blocks of matter. Molecules consist of combination of atoms. Everything consists of molecules except for the distinct atoms as listed on the periodic chart.

And what do you mean by being “part of God’s plan”? Does that mean that it is a positive thing? If the requirement for being part of God’s plan is mere existence, then can we say that murder is part of God’s plan? And does that mean that murder is a good thing?

I don’t think your logic holds up.

“Free will.”

Even with free will, a good design would not chose to perform evil acts.

It is useful to understand this by asking yourself, if you are a thorough heterosexual, when was it that you "chose" to be straight rather than gay, or rather than nothing? Odds are, if you are honest, you can't remember ever "choosing" such a thing.

Perhaps; but most heterosexuals can remember "choosing" whether to have unmarried sex in a variety of situations, singly or with a member of the opposite sex. Most can remember that for whatever reason, they chose to go ahead when they knew it was wrong, or to resist until or unless it was right, such as being with a person to whom one is thoroughly committed (this latter is admittedly on a sliding scale since the 60s, down from virgin marriage, to a mere agreement between consenting adults).

If a person is not what you call a thorough heterosexual, why would people who populate the clinical observations of the past several decades before gayness has been "cool" reveal their uncertainty unless they had an overwhelming desire to commit social suicide among potential hetero mates? They might discuss sex role anxiety with a counselor, but even if they resolved it to the point of marrying or having children, would not be eager to advertise such doubts. As part of resolving it, they might even create a benign denial or self-forgiveness for having been tempted to transgress due to past abuse, neglect or bullying.

So, can "research" into the labels of sexuality ever be 100% accurate? The pure scientific model cannot escape the issue you raised earlier: the role of free will in self-image and behavior.

After the past 20 years of relentless gay propaganda, it's a certainty that demographers will see a "puzzling" rise in the incidence of "gay identity." It will be a crock; but they will never have lived in a time when society was safe in frowning on unhealthy, disordered behaviors.

The truly dangerous thing about the lgbt movement is how anti American its core assertions are because their assertions of absolute biological determinism are not only a wholesale justification for sexual deviancy but also for all forms of human moral weakness...

Yes. That's particularly galling to me and others who lived through the early days of the 60s assault on American values in which feminists routinely chanted "Biology is not destiny!" when demonstrating for unlimited access to birth control, abortion, and an end to "sex roles" in marriage, or the end of marriage itself as a "patriarchal, oppressive institution." In fact, gay or bisexual women have largely formed the leadership of the National Organization for Women and other lefty feminist lobbies. Yet GBLT's see themselves in the same leftist camp with feminists.

Very good, except that there’s no such thing as a “molecule” of blood. Blood is a heterogeneous substance comprised of many different molecules which are not tied together by molecular bonds. Consider a house. A house is an entity comprised of wood, bricks, nails, wires, pipes, etc. Yet there’s no single component of that entity that can be defined as “house.”
