Thief Forgets To Log Off Facebook After Burglarizing Home

A Minnesota man is in jail because he logged on to Facebook.

Police say 26-year-old Nicholas Wig checked his profile from a home he broke into, and then he didn’t log off. It happened June 19 in South St. Paul.

Well, your front door is not the only way to use the computer in your home. Your wifi router, coupled with a cable modem and unlocked PC would permit a very lightly-skilled hacker to access your machine. If it’s not locked requiring a password, the user accessing it would have administrative rights - presuming the user account that has left it open is an admin.

In short, you should make your computer require a password to access it - and this means you should make it lock if left idle for a period of minutes.

Different kind of locking. You can lock down network access and still have it boot to client without a password. Of course most people don’t do that either. It’s the problem with computers being an appliance, people treat them the same as their microwave... which are also starting to get internet access.
