The United States has evacuated most of its personnel from the Embassy in Baghdad and dramatically stepped up security for those who remain as thousands of Islamic fighters bear down on Iraq's capital city.
Some 5,500 people work in the massive Embassy complex in the heavily-fortified Green Zone in Baghdad. Many will be airlifted to Amman, Jordan, and others will be sent to consulates in Basra, in the south, and Erbil, in the Kurdish north.
Other workers will remain in Baghdad.
Some 12,000 fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) are marching on Baghdad after quickly capturing Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, last week.
The fighters, who are predominately Sunni Muslims - a large minority in Iraq, then turned south and began baring down on Baghdad, capturing towns along the way.

It would appear that they’ve picked up a few people along the way. Keep in mind that the provisional IRA only had a few hundred active combatants during the troubles inNorthern Ireland. 12,000 would certainly be a force to be reckoned with.
Is there any major news channel - broadcast or cable covering/reporting on this?
These tend to be guys in pickup trucks with automatic rifles and rpgs. As I understand it, they have come up against troops with bradleys, abrahms, and other advanced weapons systems. These troops tend to just turn their weapons over without using them.
We have 2 possible answers:
1. They are cravenly cowardly behind their abrahms tank.
2. This is phony, and they are Sunnis and simply standing down.
What makes the second the likely response is that the Kurds don’t seem threatened at all.
My wife was saying that this is all over the BBC, they've been on it non-stop for over a week now.
One B-52 strike several days ago could have put a serious dent in they capabilities to attack with absolutely no risk to American lives.

Cnn’s website says 50-100 marines have been sent to beef up security in the green zone. Are you freaking kidding me? They have only evacuated a few people from the embassy. Most personnel are still there according to CNN online.
Meanwhile Fox has Greta with an OJ memorial and CNN is playing the Bush 41 memorial that was just on Fox last hour.

I’ve been scanning channels looking for coverage...nothing! Unbelievable...God help the people in our Embassy.
This smells like a total media blackout to me. We broke down and went to Al Jazeera and they are not even reporting anything right now.
Maybe it is still ‘off’ or they are playing with the flight data.
