6 climbers dead on Mount Rainier
The Seattle Times ^ | May 31, 2014 | CORAL GARNICK, et. al.

There is no chance of survival for six missing Mount Rainier climbers, officials say. The two guides and four clients from Seattle-based Alpine Ascents International were last heard from at 6 p.m. Wednesday by satellite phone.

Six climbers were killed in a 3,300-foot fall along the steep north slope of Mount Rainier, officials said Saturday, in the worst disaster on the mountain in more than three decades.

Searchers found tents and clothes, mixed with rock and ice, in a debris field along the Carbon Glacier at 9,500 feet, according to the National Park Service. The group’s climbing route, to Liberty Peak, is prone to slides and considered relatively difficult.

The six climbers — two guides and four clients from Seattle-based Alpine Ascents International — were last heard from at 6 p.m. Wednesday by satellite phone. At that time the party was at 12,800 feet with plans to camp overnight.

When they failed to return Friday as planned, the company contacted park rangers. Alpine Ascents is the company that lost five Sherpas at Mount Everest this spring.

Same unfortunate guide company as involved in Everest losses.

When you “challenge” nature, nature often wins. Bit dangerous to trudge through icy irregular terrain at 10,000 feet.Vast majority of people choose not to do so and take enough necessary risks in their daily lives. Just hope there are no additional deaths in the rescue crews or with those who try to recover the corpses.

saw the chief park ranger say on the 6pm news that the bodies may never be recovered due to the risk the area where the climber are presents.

Ultimately proves unsatisfying and empty.

The same company has lost 7 guides and 4 clients in a matter of months? Wow.

A man’s got to know his limitations.

Why?
Nature and Survival of the fittest (or the smartest) takes care of things handily.

I used to identify with mountain climbers, but now I just see it as a macho, egocentric bunch of bulls***. Most of them are liberals, and I’ll just spit it back in their face: Oh, you tried to conquer nature? Well too bad.

Why should we mourn for those who die in useless activities intended only to glorify their own egos? I used to fall for that crap, but I don’t anymore.

Same way I feel about hang-gliding, and even motorcycling though I have a bike:
I like to keep my bones inside my body.
These people fell/slid 3,000+ feet? To h*** with that!
I’ll climb a bar stool and use a safety belt.

I climbed rainier 2 years ago in bad wind conditions. The guide company, RMI, almost turned us around. That being said, I don’t understand the sneering contempt on this thread. It was one of the most awesome things I have ever done. Chill out guys - climbing mountains is for anyone with courage and a little crazy. Tragic accident.

Tragic accident.

Agreed. It was an accident. Happens daily in many sports. I have a friend who has been hit 3 times by stray golf balls in that genteel of sports.

Or we could all just sit in our Lazy Boys and b&tch all day.
