History Channel's 'The World Wars' Chock Full of Major Historical Errors
NewsBusters ^ | May 29, 2014 | P.J. Gladnick

Did you know that the Communists stormed the Winter Palace and overthrew the Czar?

If you are right now screaming at your computer screen in anger, congratulations. That means you are more informed on the subject of history than the entire History channel. The error cited above is but one of the many that the History Channel included in their three part series, "The World Wars," this week. The amazing thing is that not only a particular History Channel writer made these errors but that nobody at the History Channel spotted them. Are they so involved in the "history" of Ancient Aliens over there that they have completely lost track of real history? The lack of historical knowledge at the History Channel is astonishing as evidenced by the following errors in the series.

Maybe they need to stick with Ancient Aliens.

What hurts is that overall this was a very well done and entertaining mini-series. But I also noticed the several errors on some very basic stuff. They really marred what could have been a great work.

At first, I thought Pawn Stars was a good match for the channel since the participants are always giving historical background to the items they examine.

However, all too often I hear inaccuracies.

I thought portrayal of the the valkyrie in “Vikings” was probably more historically accurate than the few parts that I managed to watch without changing channels.

I was looking forward to this series, and had the opportunity to watch a little bit the other night before going to bed. I noticed the part about the Russian Revolution, and then they got to America’s entry into WWI. They made it sound like the Zimmerman telegram was the sole cause for America’s entry. Nothing about Germany resuming unrestricted submarine warfare.

Next came George Patton in Mexico and WWI. They chose an actor to look nothing like George Patton, had him unshaven, with an unbuttoned collar which seems completely out of character for him. They showed him writing on a tank in World War I, which is actually a World War II M-5 Stuart tank. I realize there are not a lot of World War I tanks running around, but there are some small Renault tanks that the US used at the time in various museums. It would have been better to use CGI in long shots, with a close-up of the actor on a tank where you couldn’t really see the detail of the vehicle.

Showing B-17s as they discussed Germany’s invasion of Poland and C-130s with paratroopers as they discussed D-Day makes you wonder if they hired Sheila Jackson Lee as their technical advisor. -:)

At first, I thought it was a good program, but as it progressed, I noticed that lots of relevant information was ommitted or ignored.

What grated on me was the Panetta and McLame “commentary”...sure could have done without those 2 weasels being involved...

I have found myself running to the internet on occasion while watching the History Channel and/or Military History Channel. There was once a story about the WWII Redtails that seemed to take the “artistic liberties” portrayed in the movie for granted as historical fact. I don’t remember exactly the issue but I think the History Channel might have suggested that the Red Tails never lost a bomber to German Fighters. This was movie lore only.

Agreed. However, part of the fault lies in what I call the format; i.e. attempting to cover thirty years in three days.

Seems to me they omitted the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942. Having been to the 70th anniversary celebration of the raid (held at the Museum of the USAF in Dayton), this makes me mad.

Much of what was included got oversimplified.

Plus they used WWII helmets in some of the scenes devoted to the fall of the Philippines.

I am surprised the History Channel didn’t blame WW2 on global warming.
