Residents of the Kenilworth-Parkside neighborhood have long heard promises about a better life to come.

The promise of a new recreation center. The promise of owning their public housing units. The promise of better schools so their children don't have to scatter far from home to escape a long history of subpar education in the neighborhood.

All promises unfulfilled.

Poverty? What poverty? This country is so short on poverty, we have to import it from Mexico.

What would be really "new" is if someone from the Federal Government said,

"Folks, listen up,we're broke!,there will be no more free stuff.

Take care of yourselves."

That would certainly be new, and at some point it will be the only option.

Direct millions of dollars of tax-payer money towards the problems of the black underclass? Why sure, that’ll work great!!! Because it’s worked so well in the past, hasn’t it? (snicker)

This is tragically sad. The fact is that neighborhoods in DC are turning around. But only because white yuppies are moving in and gentrifying old, run down, crime-ridden black neighborhoods.

There is one ‘hood in particular where the change knocked my sox off. When I lived in DC (25-30 years ago) if I had to drive thru there, i.e., to get to Children’s Hospital/Washington Hospital Center/Catholic University, I’d just pray NOT to get a red light. Just keep moving as fast as I could. Today, I couldn’t begin to afford to live there, it’s gone so chic. There are neighborhoods like that all over DC now.

The transformations throughout DC have been totally amazing. But no thanks to the BS put out by this thread’s article. All that’s happened, realistically, is that poor blacks have moved from DC to Prince Georges County, MD, next door, and brought all their multi-generational problems with them. At some point it has to stop with the people themselves getting responsible. “Acting white,” as it were.

"We were poor but we didn't know we were poor because we always had something to eat and some place to stay," says Claudette Brown ...

And you still do, Claudette, so you're still not poor.

...with a 28 million govt grant....

doesn’t sound like a fresh approach at all. fifty years ago ain’t fresh. fifty years of pouring other people’s money into liberal approaches that don’t work isn’t “fresh”.
