According to a report from the BBC, gay rights activist Harvey Milk has been honored on a new U.S. postage stamp. The stamp was unveiled at the White House on Thursday.

In a description of the stamp, the U.S. Postal Service says that Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. Tragically, his career in public office was cut short when he and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated.

The photo featured on the stamp is one of Milk taken in front of his camera store in San Francisco. The colors of the gay pride flag can be seen in a vertical strip in the top left corner.

This is the time when Diane Feinstein espied that ooga booga assault weapon (six-shot revolver) that traumatized her so much.

Wasn’t he killed by an ex-lover or something?

I'd be wary of breathing the air there. At the very least it would probably smell of feces.

Killed by someone whom I am guessing wasn't friendly towards homosexuals, or why else would Milk be the martyr that he is with some today?

Really? A city councilman whose claim to fame is being gay and getting shot?

Well, same with that guy…was his name Matthew Shepherd? Supposedly a martyr to homophobia, but was killed by a crazy gay guy.

The rainbow emblem is what offends me most. (Yes, I’m offended.) The US Postal Service is endorsing a political pressure group?

Actually, the killer was a fellow democrat and the conflict was over political issues, not sexuality. I’ve read that Milk was just in the line of fire, as another city politician was killed in the same rampage.

Yes, a just-underage male from the mid-west. Milk urged him to move to SF to "stay" with him. The kid later committed suicide.
