in case anyone is curious about my previous post - the white clouds were billows of smoke coming from the engine compartment. Didn’t smell like smoke (combustion) but it certainly emmanated from under the hood.

The Indonesians, Indians and Chinese are among the biggest car builders in Asia, turning out millions of cheap, reliable, basic automobiles every year.

Why on earth would they want to buy over-priced, over-engineered European and American models built by over-paid union workers that had to be shipped at vast expense half way around the world?

Thanks for clearing the air with some reality of real world driving. I grew up in a house with a long driveway on a steep incline... when visiting my parents in my old Volvo DL wagon in the wintertime... often I wouldn’t make it up the driveway. With my A2 frame VWs, however, no problems.

hehe

Chevy Cruze is one of the most popular models sold in China, as are Volkswagens, Buicks and Fords. Audis, BMWs and Mercedes are big-selling upscale models there.

They might sell well in volume terms, but would it be correct to say they are among the “most popular” models in China, compared to Nissans, Toyotas, Hondas, Hyundais etc?

World auto production is about 85 million vehicles. The industry generally targets a 60 day supply as a cushion. That means there are typically 15 million cars sitting around “unsold”. Makes for great pictures, I guess.

Not sure what you’re asking, but here’s a sample:

http://chinaautoweb.com/2014/03/most-popular-new-cars-in-february-2014/

Those Chinese sellers aren’t teensy econoboxes either. They’re not much different than the popular sedans/hatchbacks popular here.

(Japanese cars aren’t so popular, for obvious reasons).

As it is, there are more cars than there are people on the planet with an estimated 10 billion roadworthy cars in the world today.

That link answered my question fully, it is correct to say that VWs and Chevys are among the most popular cars in China.

However I note they are Chinese-built models as opposed to European or US-built models shipped half way around the world, which as I pointed out in my original post would make them prohibitively expensive. VW in China I dare say builds to a much lower spec than VW in Germany does.

In Indonesia the most popular models are locally assembled Japanese (Toyota by a country mile), followed by locally built Korean models. European and US models would be top-end rather than daily run-abouts; ie Mercedes, BMWs, Ford Everests etc. the only VWs would be the cutesy VW Beetles which price-wise bear no comparison to their predecessors.

There are simply no ordinary European or US sedans on the road, although I suppose there’s no reason why, like VW in China they couldn’t open up local assembly plants.

China requires manufacturers to have Chinese partners and build most cars in China. The Buick Excelle there is the Verano here, the VW Bora there is the Jetta here, etc. The Ford Focus is very popular, not the econobox Fiesta.

“Give them to illegal aliens, the homeless, and other socialist voters.”

Then, they will have a place to sleep, store their belongings besides a grocery cart, and for their free cell phones. Last but not least, increase their monthly welfare EBT card limits so they can buy gas.

“I can’ wait for the govt solution to this problem they created........................”

This is apparently the solution in many fellow socialist countries.
