That link answered my question fully, it is correct to say that VWs and Chevys are among the most popular cars in China.

However I note they are Chinese-built models as opposed to European or US-built models shipped half way around the world, which as I pointed out in my original post would make them prohibitively expensive. VW in China I dare say builds to a much lower spec than VW in Germany does.

In Indonesia the most popular models are locally assembled Japanese (Toyota by a country mile), followed by locally built Korean models. European and US models would be top-end rather than daily run-abouts; ie Mercedes, BMWs, Ford Everests etc. the only VWs would be the cutesy VW Beetles which price-wise bear no comparison to their predecessors.

There are simply no ordinary European or US sedans on the road, although I suppose there’s no reason why, like VW in China they couldn’t open up local assembly plants.

China requires manufacturers to have Chinese partners and build most cars in China. The Buick Excelle there is the Verano here, the VW Bora there is the Jetta here, etc. The Ford Focus is very popular, not the econobox Fiesta.
