Anti-fluoridation quacks should know there’s no debate
The Dallas Morning News ^ | 05-02-2014 | Jacquielynn Floyd

An angry reader — one of many — is impatiently waiting for me to explain myself after an earlier column in which I characterized anti-fluoride activists as delusional cranks.

“You are promoting the mass medication of your community,” she wrote. “It makes absolutely no sense to put this hazardous waste into our drinking water. Why are you pushing for this insane practice? I look forward to your response.”

I have a response, but she won’t like it: I am at an honest loss as to how to respond to crazy talk. If someone wants to believe flying saucers are beaming gamma rays into his flower beds, he is self-evidently resistant to logic. What are you supposed to say?

Anti-fluoridation quackery isn’t the comical Eisenhower-era anachronism you might suspect. It’s alive and well right here in Dallas, where activists are trying to persuade members of the Dallas City Council to end five decades of routine water fluoridation. Disturbingly, at least a few council members seem to be listening.

I’m not sure there’s any need with modern dental care.

I’ve never lived in town and had fluoridated water and my teeth are good.

One can recognize the therapeutic value of fluoride, and still oppose government dumping it into our drinking water. That amounts to involuntary mass medication.

Just more “settled” science from Jacquielynn Floyd. The wonders of fluoride[/s]. An industrial waste dumped into the water supply based on questionable science resulting from topical application research. Yep. Nothing like another excitotoxin in our food chain.

We use a Berkey water filter with flouride filters. If the govt is giving it to you its bad.

I realize that these idiots think we’re all a bunch of toothless hillbillies out here in the sticks but the fact that we aren’t seems to dispute the dire need.

Many water supplies already have fluoride in them. In some cases, fluoride has to be removed.

Fluoride makes the tooth structure strong. Modern dentistry can fix damage, but it’s better to strengthen teeth so they don’t become very damaged in the first place.

“Cranks” and “crazy talk” are just ways to dismiss legitimate criticism. If someone behaves in this manner, the likelihood is that they cannot justify their position, so they do not wish to enter a debate they could or would lose.

I grew up on a farm with no fluoridation. I’ve had no cavities.

For the last 25 years, I have lived in cities. Due to my tea intake, my teeth show signs of over fluoridation (tea has a lot of fluoride and I don’t filter fluoride out of the water).

I would eliminate fluoride in water.

I don’t drink fluoridated water, and I even do not use fluoride toothpaste. From my personal experience, fluoride does make the teeth harder, but it also makes them more brittle. The enamel of healthy, living teeth can heal from some minor damage, but enamel that is damaged by fluoride does not heal very well. And there is no health benefit to drinking fluoride, but there are health consequences.

On the other hand, I also brush and floss very frequently. Those who do not may be better off using fluoride to protect their teeth from cavities.

If I were voting on fluoride in public drinking water, I would vote against it. But if it is in the water, I will find another source for drinking.

I think people, like this author, who put blind faith in “science” and medicine, are more crazy than those of us who approach with caution and skepticism. A couple of centuries ago the author would have probably mocked those who were opposed to blood letting with leeches.

I don’t want it in my water either.
If you want it, buy it in your toothpaste.

Calcium Fluoride is okay, the other fluoride compounds they cram in the water are not.

plus there is the issue of it being “medicine” and how are they supposed to accurately control the dosages?

drinking fluoride is healthy, it’s even better for you than the mercury in your teeth.

LOL, well, I'll say this for you, you're consistant.

I, personally, think that it’s OK, as long as you wash it down with 100% grain alcohol. Lots.

Similarly, do you oppose government dumping chlorine in our drinking water?

I’m also wondering why I can actually smell the chlorine when I run the water. It’s strong as heck.
