GOPer: We Must 'Divide And Conquer' People On Public Assistance (Thom Tillis)
TPM ^ | 5/6/14 | DANIEL STRAUSS

Posted on 05/06/2014 1:48:53 PM PDT by jimbo123

North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-NC), the frontrunner in the North Carolina GOP Senate primary, told a crowd two and half years ago that we must "divide and conquer" people on government assistance. Tillis proposed pitting those who are legitimately in need against those who made bad choices.

Tillis made the comments in October 2011 in Asheville, North Carolina. They were reported by local press at the time and are being circulated now by the campaign of Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) whom Tillis is vying to unseat. They were highlighted on MSNBC"s Hardball Monday.

"What we have to do is find a way to divide and conquer the people who are on assistance," Tillis said. "We have to show respect for that woman who has cerebral palsy and had no choice, in her condition, that needs help and that we should help. And we need to get those folks to look down at these people who choose to get into a condition that makes them dependent on the government and say at some point, ‘You’re on your own. We may end up taking care of those babies, but we’re not going to take care of you.’ And we’ve got to start having that serious discussion."

Tillis went on to say that discussion wouldn't happen until at least 2013.

"It won’t happen next year. Wrong time, ‘cause it’s going to be politically charged," Tillis said. "One of the reasons why I may never run for another elected office is that some of these things may just get me railroaded out of town. But in 2013, I honestly believe that we have to do that."

Using Karl Marx’s ideas (***ANY*** of his ideas) to help the middle class is like using Adolph Hitler’s ideas to help the Jews.

Instead of dividing and conquering, how about cutting these leaches and moochers from their kneecaps? No voting privileges for those on gubmint dole.

How so? We have an obligation to take care of people who are legitimately in need.

But an able-bodied lazy person? They can starve.

Yet another example of being right in principle but saying it in a stupid way. I really, really wish for one time a candidate on our side had the political smarts to go along with being right on the issues. And the number one rule is, don’t hand your opponents a club to beat you with. Stop saying inflammatory and boneheaded things on the campaign trail.

The GOPe is flat out afraid to cut welfare programs except around the edges where they think they can get away with it politically. No welfare for sex offenders, murderers or bank robbers......

Its an incremental, symbolic and meaningless solution when a deeper and more immediate one is needed since the country is 17 trillion in the hole with budget deficits every year.

Is this just coming out today, hours before the polls close? We have to hope for a runoff to vet this guy...sounds like something that should have come out weeks ago.

Karl Rove and the GOP-e overlords knew about this tape and still picked this guy as their candidate.

Why do we have an obligation to take care of those in need? Most anyone can come up with a legitimate need. The Constitution doesn't provide for that.

The only people who should be taken care of by the federal government are veterans. The states can do what they want.

I wasn’t thinking of it on a State vs. Federal level.

Nor even a State vs. person level.

But rather at a “society” level.

Good, able-bodied people, should take care of those in need, as a matter of Judeo-Christian ethics.

I fully concur the level of government involvement should be minimized and pushed to the most local level possible.

I agree with him. I don’t know how you think this would hurt him. People are tired of supporting deadbeats.

We may end up taking care of those babies, but we’re not going to take care of you.’

The gov can't write checks to babies, babies don't see to it that food stamps are used responsibly, baby mommas get the checks and stamps.

Yes, "we" do, meaning we the people, not a constitutional requirement but a moral one. Immoral or amoral people have no legal, constitutional requirement at all.

"factions...Democrat voters"

I know quite a few hardcore, Dem voters who would be more than happy to cut welfare benefits or do more serious things to the generational leeches.
