Smartphone Kill Switch Could Become Federal Law
Information Week ^ | February 15, 2014 | Thomas Claburn

Posted on 04/22/2014 5:17:01 PM PDT by ponygirl

A week after California State Senator Mark Leno (D-CA) proposed a bill requiring a kill switch for smartphones sold in the state, federal lawmakers have put forward a similar bill.

On Thursday, US Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) introduced national legislation to require a way to disable smartphones remotely. The goal is to deter theft and protect consumers, but this defense against thieves might come with greater vulnerability to hackers, according to a mobile industry trade group.

I am posting this older article because the Smartphone "Kill Switch" was recently brought up by Katherine Albrecht. They are selling this as "consumer protection" against theft/id theft, but she pointed out that this law would give the government the means to completely erase the contents of your smartphone at any time.

So if you are witness to a federal crime - say protesters in the street getting beaten up or even murdered by fed thugs - and a dozen people record the incident with their smartphones, the federal government could go in and erase the contents of any phone that was within the radius of that incident. And suddenly, the incident becomes hearsay and "never really happened."

They are selling this as protection for you... when it is really protection for THEM and their criminal enterprise.

Just curious, which article and section of the Constitution do they feel gives them the power to do this?

They also used safety as the reason for the GPS chip. We now know it was for monitoring us without a warrant.

Yeah...they’re doing this to ‘protect us’. We saw how they cut off the cell phone towers near the Bundy ranch...they don’t want the ‘little people’ having any access if things go badly for them..

How about no more new laws, no more new government and no more regulations? repeal all the laws and government to 1800. problem solved

Add this to the Constitution. The only laws legislators at all levels that they will allowed to write is laws that protect individual rights against government and other individuals or entities using force to violate those rights. for example property rights: no theft , no trespassing, no vandalism, no confiscation without due process of law. and then no assault, no murder, no stalking, no repeated harrassment verbal or physical. Patents yes , that's property rights. but noting having to do with welfare , or educating people or solving fake crisis like global warming.

The goal is to deter theft and protect consumers...

Again, can't consumers do this now by contacting their telephone providers to have them disable the phones?

Why do the police need to have this capability?

If your credit card is stolen, it's not the police who have your credit card disabled, you do. It should be the same with the cellphones.

What makes cellphones any different than credit cards when it comes to theft and consumer protection?

The answer is nothing. It's not about consumer protection.

It's about protecting the police and federal agencies from having their despotic actions recorded. It's about disabling your cellphone to isolate you, to keep you from gathering for protection.

When the police begin keeping secrets, we have a Secret Police.

Yes so democrats can massacre at Bunkerville like democrat President clinton murdered 100 Americans at Waco and then the media can cover for them.

someone needs to come up with some back up devices or hacks to bypass this tyranny so we can have evidence of their crimes

What makes you think that I'll be where they can lay hands on me? Not everyone stands around like an idiot, and waits for bad things to happen.
