“They thought he was there to fulfill Messianic prophecy. Why did they think that?”

They thought that because THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND the prophecies. If you look at the OT, throughout it you will see the prophets one after another being sent to Israel again and again with the word of God telling them to repent, turn back to Him, put away their idols. Their spiritual condition before Him was a deadness. They honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. They became prideful in being “God’s chosen people” (this is still true today). So, God has reached out to the Gentiles (just as He said He would when He spoke to Abraham).

Here is the OT depiction of the Celebration of the first fruits. Notice in addition to the sheafs of fruits a lamb was also offered. This was well known as prophetic though very few even in Jesus’ time knew the whole import of the feast until after the Resurrection. God offered his own Son as that first fruits lamb and then raised him up after 3 days and 3 nights on the day of “First Fruits”. Jesus was the first fruits of an order of men that would be filled with the spirit of God and someday be resurrected, to be seated with Christ, heirs of his salvation.

Leviticus 23:10-14

10 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. 12 And on the day when you wave the sheaf, you shall offer a male lamb a year old without blemish as a burnt offering to the Lord. 13 And the grain offering with it shall be two tenths of an ephah[a] of fine flour mixed with oil, a food offering to the Lord with a pleasing aroma, and the drink offering with it shall be of wine, a fourth of a hin.[b] 14 And you shall eat neither bread nor grain parched or fresh until this same day, until you have brought the offering of your God: it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Very simple really, though it all depends on your internal filter...whether or not you can accept the premises I’ve offered you. Do refer also back to Jeremiah 31:31 to 34 as you read this passage. DO YOU NOW GET WHAT I AM SAYING? In Adam we die...In Christ we are made alive! A new order of man, a new royal priesthood after the order of Melchizedek! Sons and Daughters of God!(would you like to be one...for real? )

Christ said on one occaision “I am the Resurrection and the life,; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”…
(Either a crazy man or God can say something like this...you choose which to believe, I’ll not be held responsible for your own choices.)

It was at that point Jesus speaks with the Father...and then raises Lazarus from the grave.

This is as good a place to start as any: “Gen. 3:15; And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (What does this have to do with a Messiah?)”

What’s the apparent problem with the passage?

Actually, why not start at Genesis 1:1 until you reach 3:15?

I also believe that John 3:17 should be added to this thread. "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

Not just the Jews, but the world.

They thought he was there to fulfill Messianic prophecy. Why did they think that?

For one thing, they witnessed countless miracles that Jesus performed. They also thought that because they only knew what they had been taught, the scope of their thinking was quite limited by Jewish legalism and interpretation.

The disciples had to be taught by Christ that he was coming not to set up a powerful political kingdom, instead he was establishing God's eternal kingdom. Which was admittedly, a major shift in concept for them to understand. Which is the greatest reason for celebration of all, BTW.

Good point...wish I could edit and put it back into my previous posts...but she had asked about succinct bullet point explanations...as how one speaks to a child. John 3:16 is a place to start.

Matthew definitely didn’t write anything in Greek.

Matthew wrote in his native language, Hebrew.

No Jew in Judea would ever have used Greek for anything. The Maccabeean revolt was still well remembered in the first century.

All of the NT was originally written in Hebrew, and soon thereafter translated to Aramaic for those in the surrounding regions. Greek came later.

You keep asking wacked out strawman questions that have no relation to reality.

Torah describes how sinful man has to live in the future hope of redemption. It is the body of the contract under which we all endure to this day. It is “instruction in Righteousness.”

No Hebrew was ever led to believe that Torah could save them. They always knew that their confession of transgression of Torah and sin offering were dependent on belief in their future redemption by a sinless man. That is what Abraham and Isaac’s trip up Mount Moriah was all about, why don’t you read up on it? God provided the lamb then, and he provided his sinless son as the ultimate and fully effective ‘lamb’ at Calvary.

We no longer have to make a sin offering, but we still must endure in faith to our end. The main difference now is that his blood has been shed, and it should be easier to continue in faith now. It was the promise of grace for Adam, and it is the same for us now.

The blood of sheep and goats has never had the power to justify the sinner.

>> “So it’s clear they expected that the Messiah would actually rule, legally. Like a King does.” <<

.
And he will, ten days after we are gathered at the last trump, after the 7 bowls of Yehova’s wrath have been poured out on the Earth, At Succot, he will return to Earth as an avenging King, With his elect, and establish his seat of government on the temple mount.

If you were not caught up to join him at the last trump, this return will not be good news for you.

>> “ I had asked why Jesus didn’t admit to Pilates that he was the Son of God” <<

.
The simple succinct answer to this is that he couldn’t take the chance of tipping his hand to Satan.

Had Satan figured out what the crucifixion was going to accomplish, he would have aborted it.

This is also why he spoke in parables to the people, and commanded all demons to silence when they declared him to be “the Holy one of God.”

I am God’s workmanship, created for good works which He has appointed in advance to do.

I don’t know about YOU.

You have a very idiosyncratic view of Christianity. Either you are right and most of the Christian leading lights in the world (who show it by their works) are wrong, or else you have your head up your spiritual derriere.

I’m going with the latter.

You can go with anything you like, I go with Yehova’s word, not man’s twisting of it to make it sweet.

You appear to be Satan’s workmanship, the way that you constantly attempt to turn and blunt Yehova’s word.

By the way, it’s easy to tell eisegesis.

It’s when you ice Jesus.

You’ve got Him in the deep freeze. Jesus didn’t come to advise. None are in a shape to accept much of that advice. Jesus came to personally, spiritually save by bearing a burden that nobody forced Him to, and we just saw how once more this past Good Friday.

You appear to be Satan’s workmanship, the way you denigrate the salvational role of Jesus. You aren’t in any shape to accept His advice yet you pretend you are, and that results in hypocritical self righteousness on your part.

Very cute but meaningless.

You stray from the word constantly in your humanistic interpretations.

I stray from your eisegesis. I am sorry you do not like it.

Now I shall leave for a time like the “devil” I am.

By the way, God is a “satan” to evildoers. You’re doing evil.

The hate in your posts glows.

I invite you to explain how Christ is in your heart.

I see next to no evidence that any such thing could even possibly have happened.

You are a grand legalist.
