American Legion shoots down idea to tie immigration to military service
Jacqueline Klimas and Stephen Dinan ^ | The Washington Times

Posted on 04/15/2014 8:51:33 PM PDT by ObamahatesPACoal

The American Legion says it is opposed to trying to tie immigration into the annual defense policy debate, calling it an unacceptable “amnesty” and dealing a serious blow to Republicans desperate to pass some sort of legalization of illegal immigrants ahead of November’s elections.

Several Republicans say they want to attach a small legalization that would grant an explicit chance at citizenship to young illegal immigrants willing to join the military.

Maybe Jeff Denham should have consulted groups other than La Raza, Frank Sharry and Eric Cantor.

That’s yet another lesson we can learn from the former Roman Empire.

Arrest all Illegal Alien Invaders from Mexico at the US/Mexican Border, and hold them in desert prisons for 6 months, as specified by CURRENT US Border Laws.

The only Border Reform that needs to be done is to force our politicians in “both” political parties to demand that all existing Border Laws be strictly enforced.

As someone who has served in the military, this is a point that I’m a little “over the barrel” on. If a person is willing to serve, and they serve honorably, I think they should be given front of the line consideration for citizenship.

How about we add nine months border patrol to the nine weeks boot camp regimen for our natural-born and naturalized U.S. Army patriots?

I’m sure my son with years of Special Forces duty would agree, but I will ask him. During Gulf War I his Guatemalan friend who was also one of his groomsmen took up the task of forwarding supplies and food to his post in Saudi Arabia.

Agreed...
Military service for citizenship is a tradition almost as old as civilization itself.

Eh, they could’ve called the bluff. These illegals have as much interest in serving in the military, serving this country, being away from their families as much as they have interest in learning our language and culture.

And for what? They’ve been ushered along, given primary status, heck, around here, they push to the front of the line, get instate tuition and scholarships a lot sooner than military, they outrank veterans.

They could’ve called the bluff, and it would have gone nowhere, though the media would’ve changed the story for cover,

It’s just a musing. though quite true.

No, the republicans (GOPe) have just no real idea what goes on in the military. It’s work, esp fro recruits. These guys, the ones around here, no, they are not interested in serving this country, what was the military supposed to do with the 90% of the washouts?

The military only works when they have the clear and real option of dishonorable discharge actually meaning something, how’s that supposed to hurt an illegal?.
And they would never kick an illegal out of the military any sooner than they’d deport him.

Could we get some people in government, into politics who have just some bit of intelligence?

American citizens who want to serve in the military should be given those spots before any consideration for illegal alien or DREAMers takes place. Then if there are spots left, noncitizens can be considered for service. And then if they serve honorably, they should be considered for citizenship. But there must not be a priority for giving citizens first shot at joining the services or Jeff Sessions would not be hollering about it.

there have been, as long as I remember, a great lot of Filipinos in the military.

I know many who have retired and have continued to contribute to this country and their community.

When do we get a break from people, politicians, expecting us to dream that any immigrant is the same as any other, illegal or not.

Just a break

What a great idea!

People who really don’t like us, longing for revenge against the hated Gringo, would get the right to arm themselves with hi power automatic weapons un obtainable by the citizenry!

I can’t wait!

Almost as intelligent as um, home employment for burglary convicts?

As someone who has also served, I consider it an insult that illegal aliens should be allowed to serve in the military. We have plenty of Americans and legal immigrants who can serve in those positions, especially as the military is being reduced.

There is already a program to allow green card holders to serve and receive expedited citizenship. We don't have a mercenary military that needs to recruit foreign national lawbreakers to serve, an honor and privilege for those that do.

The Left and Rep pro-amnesty creeps like to use these emotional ploys to gain acceptance of lawbreakers. We either have the Rule of Law or we don't. Just because the CIC violates the law regularly does not mean that we must accept it from others.

Jeff Denham supported Pelosi’s HR15 amnesty bill. He hasn’t signed the discharge petition because it would be a waste of time and he wouldn’t be able to pull stunts like this.

He is just floating a bunch of smaller amnesties he thinks he can pass.

Even if the idea is legitimate it should be a standalone bill that goes to the judiciary where Denham fears Gohmert will debunk his never served myth.

Steve King could help sink Coffman if Coffman takes him up on a debate.

And just to add a little coda to your post.

How many legal immigrants would we have if the Draft still existed?

Beyond the silly registration charade we have now.

No affirmative action for the little darlings of the newly arrived either: just do the push ups, kid.

The exodus of the already arrived would seem like a tidal wave.

But, were they allowed to become American citizens because of their service? Most of the Filipinos I served with only wanted to get their 20 in and return to the PI with their pensions ... to live like kings.

Then if there are spots left, noncitizens can be considered for service. And then if they serve honorably, they should be considered for citizenship.

I would qualify that and say legal non-citizens. We have over 30,000 green card holders serving in the military. They receive expedited citizenship in return. Since September 2002, USCIS has naturalized 89,095 members of the military.

We should never allow illegal aliens to serve unless we are engaged in a major war. By law, illegal aliens are supposed to register for the draft.
