PET Scans Offer Clues on Vegetative States
NY Times ^ | Apr 15, 2014 | Denise Grady

Posted on 04/15/2014 7:55:21 PM PDT by Innovative

People who are vegetative for a year are thought to have little or no chance of recovering, and the condition can become grounds for withdrawing medical treatment. Terri Schiavo, in a vegetative state for 15 years, died in 2005 in Florida after courts allowed the removal of her feeding tube.

Researchers say the findings support the idea that some patients who appear vegetative have some level of consciousness that they cannot show — perhaps low, but real — and the potential to recover.

Diagnostic precision of PET imaging and functional MRI in disorders of consciousness: a clinical validation study

Whether or not they have a chance at recovery is irrelevant. The fact that they still have some level of awareness is reason enough to not murder them. What was done to Terry was horrendous.

Unfortunately, you can’t read more than the abstract of that article without hitting the pay wall.

That’s the whole point - Terri was murdered so her husband could marry his girlfriend who wanted Catholic church wedding. He needed to be a widower for that to happen. Not to mention that this really was a test case to “euthanize” a human being who was not terminally ill. Jeb Bush’s shame for not stopping it.

The story would have more credibility if they didn’t claim Terry Schiavo was in a vegetative state. She was NOT.

“..Jeb Bush’s shame for not stopping it.”

The Bush family just does not fight hard enough. We can’t afford to have any more wimps in politics fighting the left.

Yak yak yak. Talk talk talk. Conjecture conjecture conjecture. Medical and behavioral “authorities” have not the slightest clue whether comatose patients are unconscious or screaming inside their heads. They don’t like to talk about the cases that do recover after being declared brain dead. No they don’t like it at all. Like so many professions these “experts” just make stuff up as they go along. They rely on the apathy of most people who believe these “experts” with college degrees actually know much of anything.

One thing I have learned in life is that someone being considered an “expert” at an intangible skill is meaningless.

Agreed - We all need to start pushing back on the Left whenever we are confronted. Can’t leave this all up to the weak politicians - they are a reflection of the wimpiness of the Nation.

They don’t like to talk about the cases that do recover after being declared brain dead.

Brain dead is exactly what those words mean: the brain is necrotic tissue in which no metabolic activity is taking place. No one recovers from being brain dead.

People do sometimes recover from states where the brain is alive, but the person is unresponsive. These newer imaging techniques are getting better and better at mapping brain activity. They are showing that at least some comatose people are aware of their environment. So, if you ever have a friend or relative unlucky enough to be in a coma, you should talk to them as if they can hear you.

You must have a subscription to The Lancet. I do not. I can try the article at work, but I don’t think our library has a subscription, either.

I would say that the girlfriend (now wife?) of Terri’s worthless “husband” isn’t all that bright.

If he could kill Terri so easily, he won’t hesitate to do the same to another woman if it suits him.

Jeb’s cowardice cost Terri her life. Untold others have been murdered since then, as the left has been emboldened. There’s no longer any question of whether it’s alright to murder expensive and inconvenient people. It’s just an accepted fact that they are expendable.

Jeb Bush is one of many guilty parties who helped bring about the current slaughter of innocents. Jeb played the role of Pontius Pilate in the execution of Terri Schiavo. He has much to answer for.

This is cool and I’ve watched a study of someone sleeping while they record the dream. Pretty amazing stuff.

hangin’ judge greer wouldn’t permit any tests be done on Terri cuz he’d triggered the kill switch a long time ago for all the RINO republicans who donated to his campaigns and vice versa. Emphasis on “vice”.
