U.S. should send troops to quell Ukraine crisis
washingtonpost.com ^ | April 15, 2014 | James Jeffrey

Posted on 04/15/2014 10:41:46 AM PDT by Berlin_Freeper

Despite much diplomatic effort, the situation in Ukraine worsens. A coordinated Russian campaign, including an invasion threat, special operations destabilization in eastern Ukraine patterned on the Crimea model, and warnings of gas cutoffs document ever more clearly Vladimir Putin’s aim to cripple the Ukrainian government and control much or even all of this strategically vital European country.

Not only no, but hell no.

We don’t need ground troops in the Ukraine.

That would be like the Ruskies sending ground troops to Mexico. It’s not like we don’t have a heck of a lot of firepower stationed right here in the good ole US of A.

Those who are amazed that Russia has thousands of troops INSIDE RUSSIA on the Ukrainian border are being either willfully or blindly ignorant. How stupid can they be? It BORDERS Russia. Right there. Right on it.

I feel bad for the Ukraine, but they’re losing because Obama and Clinton sold them down the river with no ABM, no nukes, and limitations on their military capabilities.

I have people in Ukraine whom I love very much. But sending our ground troops there is about the stupidest idea ever

Yeah, and the guys in charge back then had some familiarity with with the horrors of global warfare and understood what direct confrontation meant. For the past 20 years this country’s foreign policy has been run by a bunch of draft dodging chicken hawks. Oh, and back then NATO wasn’t blowing up planes and troops on Russia’s front doorstep. They’re a little touchy about that things like that.

Actually, the reverse is true. Because few of today's rulers have direct knowledge of combat, they quail at trivial casualty numbers. Zhukov fed millions into the meat grinder. It's only with exposure to mass death that commanders develop a tolerance for large scale casualties.

Send the BLM, and the whatever army the Social Security department has that needs all the ammo they have amassed.

We kill two birds with one stone...and the Russian aren’t either of the two birds.

The BLM would indeed be strengthened by the example. The Maidanheads make sure to keep the numerical advantage in their kampfgruppen.

If Ukraine was actually using their military to take back installations taken by the disguised Spetsnaz I would have some sympathy for this author’s opinion. But since the resolve of the Ukraine to defend its sovereign territory falls light years short of the resolve shown by the ARVN I’m for leaving them to their own devices.

How about air-launched-cruise-missiles?

We could take targeting from the Ukraine Government, and clear out those rats-nests of illegal non-uniformed combatants who speak only Russian.

Well, on the one hand Ambassador Jeffrey has served Presidents of both parties and has been there, so to speak, in Vietnam. I find the "tripwire" concept absurd in that part of the world, and given the resolve of this administration, but Jeffrey is absolutely correct that half a world away and six decades ago, the United States took a different approach, withdrawing its forces from South Korea. North Korea and its Russian supporters saw that as a green light to invade, only to learn, three years and millions of casualties later, that the United States was serious about defending a friend.

So to use the Jeffrey analogy, we need to be prepared to defend our friend. Just over 1.5 million Americans served in Korea, peak UN forces in country just under a million, under 150,000 casualties, so the Ambassador is potentially advocating a rather significant undertaking. I'd suggest an immediate draft.

Unless, of course, we're sending a tripwire we won't back if tripped. Kind of a red line. In that case, I'd prefer European troops provide the wire.

Needless to say that won't happen. A better idea, send some BLM agents, supported by the ATF who can take the Russians guns. Or sell them some.

As long as we don't step up energy production, creating American jobs and depressing energy prices. That might hurt turtles somewhere.

This mutt Jeffrey is a big hero when it comes to sending other folks’ kids into battle. One can bet he never served in the military.
No troops, but we should help them with arms and let them learn how to make IED’s so they the freedom fighters can make hell for the Russkies just how the Afghans kicked their asses.

What exactly is the national SECURITY threat to the US?

That is the first qualifying question, but is rarely asked. The Russian dispute with Ukraine poses ZERO threat to the security of the United States or to any of our European allies. But the continued expansion of NATO around the Black Sea poses a very serious national security threat to Russia, which is why Putin has responded so forcefully to the recent West-sponsored coup in Kiev.

James Jeffrey defends the many "tripwires" that the United States has installed around the world by our forward deployment of small combat brigades. But four new realities make this old Cold War posturing more dangerous than ever:
1. We have made far more of these "tripwire" commitments than we can possibly honor at any one time;
2. Our armed forces are depleted and exhausted from two decades of constant war, and are presently downsizing to our weakest conventional position since before the Korean War;
3. Our economy is overwhelmed with debt and would be crushed by the spending required to support a major war; and
4. Our numerous enemies around the world know all of these things, and are encouraged to act in concert.

And still the War Party beats the drums for more military adventurism, more taxation and even more borrowing, so that we will buy more weapons and spill more blood and then buy even more weapons and... For the political class, war is a racket. But for everyday Americans, needless war damns our future.

Europe has to tighten its energy belt for awhile. Or else the wolf is at their door.

This is, of course, theoretical. Nobody in leadership around the world (excepting Putin) has the gonads required.

"What NATO could do is offer to patrol Ukrainian air space, at the Ukrainian government’s invitation."

Screw NATO, they only exist because of USA dollars and support. They're worthless. I'm really thinking it's time to pull up the drawbridge and get the hell out of policing the world. I used to believe we should stay involved, but not so certain now. Let them self-destruct, but when they turn their eye to America, KILL THEM ALL QUICKLY, as in Dresdan, Hiroshimo, Nagasaki.

Leave us alone or fell the full wrath of the greatest military might on this rock. BTW, Obama won't soil our Oval Office forever. Even Hillary would have more balls if push came to shove, even with her failing in Benghazi.

Oh, I agree. We must immediately send US Ground Troops.

And those troops must be made up exclusively of Washington Post staffers.

HOOAH!
