University students "celebrating" the last day of classes. The location is an older, established neighbourhood near the University of Calgary main campus. Will we now get a knife registry in Canada? The long gun registry wasn't such a great success.

Poochie gets a treat...

A male suspect who fled the scene was intercepted by police after about half an hour. He had to be treated for minor injuries because he was bitten by a dog from the police K-9 unit and was taken into custody after his hospital discharge.

Of course you hadn't heard about it. The killer used a knife.

Almost as sad as the fact that these young people were killed is the media's level of interest is determined by the method of their murder.

According to some raw video, the perp seems to be a young man of Nubian persuasion.

There are no words to describe how low such a crime is killing people at a point of vulnerability, knife or otherwise.

But Michael Moore promised us that there are no guns, knives, violence, or unruliness in Canada. I’m flabbergasted, eh.

I keep insisting that people who conceal carry should always have a knife as a twin to their gun. Knives complement handguns exceptionally well, especially inside buildings.

The Tueller Drill is often cited, but this is of an armed police officer *expecting* a knife attack, who still needs more than 21 feet to have an advantage. A civilian, with concealed carry, who is *not* expecting an attack, needs, as a rough guess, 30 feet or more to effectively use their gun this way.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tueller_Drill

However, a sheath knife can be very rapidly drawn, and it provides good quality defense within 5 feet, even being aided by the momentum of the attacker.

Soldiers in trenches in World War I quickly figured out that the ideal combination for hand to hand fighting in a trench was a pistol in one hand and a trench knife in the other. And, if you think about it, the corridors and rooms of a building are not very different from a trench with a ceiling.

But it is also a great combination outside, because you may not be aware of a threat until it is close, and discreetly brandishing a knife is an effective counter to an attack without attracting too much attention in case it isn’t.

It’s hard to tell from the raw video since they tried their best to blur out the perp’s features/characteristics.

But I’d say either Nubian or Middle Eastern.

Third mass stabbing in the world in the last several weeks. China, US and now Canada.

...or “Native American”. I think they figure prominently in Canadian social-pathology stats.

having lived in NW Calgary before and been back last year, it’s not the same as when I was there in the late 90s.

To assume it’s middle eastern type person is a reasonable assumption. However, I hate assuming, I like to know, so I will hold out.

Calgary does have a moslem mayor now and tons of halal stores. I didn’t recognize it anymore last I was there to take kids to the Calgary Zoo. I won’t be going back.

U of C has over 30,000 students and many are from overseas. The Brentwood/Charleswood neighbourhood, where this house is located, is an older, established neighbourhood, where many houses are rented out to students, The U of C and SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) have many foreign students. Since Calgary is the centre of the energy business in Canada, many Middle Eastern students attend here to ‘learn’ about the energy business.

A friend, a former instructor in Petroleum Engineering Technology at SAIT, shared with me, how many of the Saudis who attended SAIT fail, or barely pass. They spend almost no time studying, instead partying and shopping. Though not all, many exhibit an attitude of superiority over others. I pity the poor in Saudi, as most who attend these schools are children of the rich.

Of course, it is in the interest of these schools to have foreign students because fees are greater, though such fees, even for foreign students, are generally, much less than US post-secondary schools.

Thanks. It looks like the man in the news video but Global News obscured his face. By showing his face, Nancy may now find herself looking for a new job.

Does CPS (in tweet in linked site) stand for Calgary Police Service or Child Protective Service, if you know.

The suspect is the son of a 33 year veteran of the Calgary Police Service. How bizarre! All the dead are U of C students from Calgary or Priddis.
