If a nuclear bomb exploded in downtown Washington, what should you do?
The Week ^ | April 14, 2014

Funny question in the headline, yes?

But since President Obama worries more about the threat of terrorists' improvised nuclear device going off in a major American city than anything Russia can throw at us, I was wondering if the government had deigned to share with us citizens any tips for, you know, surviving something their own intelligence points to as the likeliest unlikely Black Swan event.

Well, no. And yes.

No — very few people in Washington, D.C., who work for the government have any idea what they would do if a 10-kiloton nuclear device exploded at the intersection of 16th and K streets.

You can always look to movies to figure this stuff out, right? And in movies, since nuclear radiation is BAD, the thing to do is to get away from it as quickly as possible. In the movies, electronics are fried, too, the response is chaotic, and hundreds of thousands of people die.

Interestingly enough, though, the government has done quite a bit of work to figure out what exactly would happen if a suitcase nuke — which, I know, doesn't really exist, but, for the sake of this example, bear with me — actually did explode a few blocks from the White House.

The USA does not posses the man power to “crack down” on 300 million citizens. Do the math.

Might as well get comfortable since we can’t stop it. We just have to deal with whatever happens after they do it.

And they will do it. Several of Barrys advisers are proponents of population reduction.

It was a joke thread! You got your panties in a bunch over a joke!

No, it was a rhetorical question that involved the deaths of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. Many of them innocent. One of them being the love of my life. The fact that you or anyone else found humor in it is perplexing.

They’ve thought of that, especially about missiles launches from ships, so they significantly extended the inspection zone for the Coast Guard. I believe it is now 200 miles from the coast.

Besides, the real discussion here is the fact that so many here would jump at the opportunity to dance on the radioactive ashes of innocent people to make some sick political point.

You have to admit, radioactive ashes are pretty funny.

These guys are walking on radioactive ashes, and they're all grinning.

Where do you get the idea all 300 million citizens would be opposed to a govt. crackdown especially if it was a selective crackdown on lefts political enemies?

The fact that you or anyone else found humor in it is perplexing.

Humor is in the eye of the beholder.

Kinda like a shard of glass.

Not to be callous but their sacrifice would be worth the destruction of the nest of snakes that is DC.

No one (let me repeat that) NO ONE wants to see ANY city or part of our country attacked. It was a joke!

The fact that you took it so personally is perplexing.

Move them too. No good comes out of that place.

Maybe when (God forbid) her father passes. He's ill on many different levels and has a team of doctors that know him and it would be impossible, at this late stage to relocate and find all the doctors he would need.

Upon his demise, I'm confident my mother in law would relocate. I'm sure you understand that while I don't want to be here in Maryland, I'm not looking forward to my wife's father passing away either to facilitate the move.

What difference does it make?

None. the dead would still vote democratic.

The dead would be listed in the census (times 10!) to increase the welfare payments and number of demmocrats receiving government payroll checks.

Unfortunateley, this is not a bad joke:

Roughly 10,000 military personnel were expected to participate in the maneuvers, which are intended as practice for a large-scale nuclear offensive, according to the Russian newspaper. Exercise participants were set to position and prepare missile-firing units for launch, and to practice various administrative and support functions for the operation, said Col. Igor Yegorov, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman for the strategic missile services.

link in Russian: (they had 13 drills in 2013 x 3000 soldiers particpating each time. They expect to have more and larger drills in 2014) http://www.ng.ru/armies/2014-03-26/6_strike.html

Why are they doing this?
